The 12x12 opening is sized for most standard DWV and plumbing service points, and the white plastic case won't rust or corrode in damp spots near pipes.
It installs into drywall or similar surfaces and closes flush for a finished look, so you're not stuck cutting a new hole every time something needs a look or a repair.
