Every bag of lawn fertilizer wears three big numbers on the front — and most people grab one without knowing what they mean. Those digits decide whether your grass greens up, burns out, or barely notices. Read them right and you’ll buy the correct bag the first time, spread the correct amount, and skip the two most common mistakes: over-feeding and feeding at the wrong time of year.
The three numbers are the N-P-K ratio — percent Nitrogen, Phosphorus, and Potassium by weight. For an established lawn, a high-nitrogen fertilizer with a ratio near 3-1-2 or 4-1-2 (for example 24-0-6 or 29-0-5) is the everyday pick, applied at about one pound of actual nitrogen per 1,000 square feet. Match the timing to your grass type, buy a slow-release formula, and calibrate your spreader — that trio matters more than the brand on the bag.
N-P-K is always listed in the same order: Nitrogen, Phosphorus, Kotassium (chemistry uses K for potassium). The numbers are percentages by weight of the bag. A 50-pound bag of 24-0-6 is 24% nitrogen (12 lb), 0% phosphorus, and 6% potassium (3 lb) — the rest is filler and carrier that helps you spread it evenly. Each nutrient does a specific job, so the ratio tells you what the product is for before you ever read the marketing.
Nitrogen drives green, leafy top growth — it’s the number that makes a lawn look thick and lush, and the one lawns burn through fastest. Phosphorus feeds root development and is critical for new seedlings, which is why starter fertilizers carry a high middle number. Tip: many regions now ban or restrict phosphorus on established lawns to protect waterways — that’s why so many bags read 0 in the middle. A soil test is the only way to know if you truly need it; your local hardware store can point you to a test kit or your county extension office.
Two bags with different numbers can do the same job if the ratio matches. Turf specialists usually recommend a roughly 3-1-2 or 4-1-2 balance of N-P-K for general feeding. So 12-4-8 and 24-8-16 are effectively the same fertilizer — the second is just twice as concentrated, meaning you spread half as much to deliver the same nutrients. That’s why comparing bags on price-per-bag is a trap; compare on cost per pound of nitrogen instead.
The number that should drive most purchases is nitrogen, because that’s what an established lawn consumes. The standard target is about one pound of actual nitrogen per 1,000 square feet per feeding. To find how much product that takes, divide 1 by the nitrogen percentage (as a decimal): a 24-0-6 bag needs 1 ÷ 0.24 = roughly 4.2 lb of product per 1,000 sq ft. Brands like Scotts, Pennington, Jonathan Green, and Milorganite all print application rates right on the bag — but knowing the math lets you swap brands without guessing.
Flip the bag over and look at the nitrogen breakdown. Quick-release (water-soluble) nitrogen greens the lawn fast — days — but it’s gone in two to four weeks and is the leading cause of fertilizer burn if you overdo it. Slow-release (coated, or organic like Milorganite) meters nitrogen out over six to eight weeks or more, giving even color, fewer mowings-of-doom, and almost no burn risk. For most homeowners, a fertilizer that’s at least half slow-release is the safest, most forgiving choice.
Organic options — composted manure, feather meal, biosolids — are all slow-release by nature and improve the soil over time, though they cost more per pound of nitrogen and work slower in cold soil. If you also fight weeds, weed-and-feed products bundle fertilizer with a herbicide, but they force you to feed on the herbicide’s schedule; keeping weed control separate usually gives better results.
The right fertilizer applied at the wrong time is wasted money — sometimes worse, since off-season nitrogen feeds weeds and invites disease. Timing hinges on whether you grow cool-season grass (fescue, ryegrass, Kentucky bluegrass — most of the northern U.S.) or warm-season grass (Bermuda, zoysia, St. Augustine — the South). Feed each when it’s actively growing, never when it’s dormant.

Even the perfect bag fails if it goes down unevenly — you’ll get dark-green stripes next to pale, hungry ones. A broadcast or drop spreader is worth its small cost. Broadcast (rotary) spreaders cover large lawns fast; drop spreaders trade speed for precision near beds and edges. Either way, set it to the rate printed on the bag, and for insurance, apply half the product walking north-south and the other half east-west so any gaps overlap.
For liquid feeds — hose-end concentrates or spot treatments — a simple sprayer does the job, and a pair of garden gloves keeps the product off your hands. Whatever you use, calibrate once and mark your setting so next season is a two-minute job.
