A pressure washer can strip years of grime off a driveway in minutes — or splinter your deck, etch your siding, and burn out its pump before the first summer ends. The difference is buying the right machine for the surfaces you actually own, not the biggest number on the box.
Match the tool to the job. For most homeowners — cars, patios, decks, siding, and fences — a 1,800–2,300 PSI electric washer is the right call. Step up to a 2,800–3,300 PSI gas unit only if you have long concrete driveways, a large property, or paint-prep work. Watch the GPM (flow rate) as closely as the PSI, and never point anything above 2,000 PSI at wood or a car without dialing it back.
This is the fork in the road, and it decides almost everything else. Electric pressure washers are lighter, quieter, start with a button, need no oil or gas, and can run indoors (in a garage, say) without fumes. They plug into a standard outlet and are ideal for cars, patio furniture, grills, decks, and single-story siding. Brands like Ryobi, Greenworks, and Sun Joe dominate this space, and a good one runs all season with almost no maintenance.
Gas washers hit harder and don’t tether you to a cord and a spigot. If you’re cleaning a 60-foot concrete driveway, prepping a house for paint, or working acreage far from an outlet, gas is worth the noise, weight, and upkeep. Honda-powered units from Simpson, Ryobi, and DeWalt are the workhorses here. The trade-off: oil changes, ethanol-free fuel or stabilizer, pull-starts, and a machine you don’t want running in an enclosed space.

Everyone shops on PSI (pounds per square inch, the striking force), but the real cleaning power is PSI × GPM — because GPM (gallons per minute) is how fast you rinse the loosened dirt away. A 2,000 PSI / 1.2 GPM machine and a 2,000 PSI / 1.6 GPM machine feel very different: the higher flow finishes the job noticeably faster. Some manufacturers publish a combined “Cleaning Units” (CU) figure — that’s just PSI multiplied by GPM, and it’s the honest way to compare two machines.
Rule of thumb: for general home use, look for at least 1.4 GPM. Below that, high PSI just means you’re standing in one spot longer.
The nozzle changes the spray angle — and a tighter angle concentrates the same PSI into a smaller, far more aggressive point. Most washers ship with a color-coded set of quick-connect tips, plus (often) an adjustable soap tip. Learn these before you pull the trigger, because a 0-degree tip on cedar will carve grooves in seconds.
Many newer units use an all-in-one adjustable nozzle instead of a tip set — convenient, but the swappable tips give you more control. A rotating or “turbo” nozzle (a 0° jet that spins in a cone) is the secret weapon for baked-on driveway grime, and a good add-on to look for.
The base machine is only half the purchase. A pressure washer is far more useful with the right hardware around it, and a surprising amount of frustration comes from a garden hose that can’t feed the pump. Cheap hoses kink and starve the unit; a good garden hose keeps water moving at full flow.
Pressure alone rarely does the best work — the right cleaner does. Use pressure-washer-safe detergents (many surfaces clean better with a dedicated house-wash, deck brightener, or degreaser drawn through the soap tip, dwelled a few minutes, then rinsed). For mildew on north-facing siding, a cleaner formulated for it beats blasting harder. When you’re staining afterward, matching the job to the right exterior stain and letting the wood dry fully makes all the difference.
Safety isn’t optional: a pressure washer can inject water (and infection) under your skin. Never point it at people or pets, wear closed-toe shoes and eye protection, keep both hands on the wand, and never use a gas unit indoors. Ladders plus recoil are a bad mix — use an extension wand instead of climbing.

Use a good, kink-free garden hose that can feed full water flow, or the pump can starve and wear out. For soap, use only pressure-washer-safe detergents drawn through the low-pressure soap tip. Regular dish soap or bleach can damage seals and pumps and should be avoided.
