Drill vs. Impact Driver: Which One You Actually Need

They share the same batteries and sit side by side on the shelf, so it’s easy to assume a drill and an impact driver do the same job. They don’t — and picking the right one (or both, in the right order) is the difference between clean work and a pile of stripped screws and a sore wrist.

The short answer

Buy a drill/driver first — it’s the do-everything tool that drills holes and drives screws with control. Add an impact driver once you’re regularly sinking long screws or lag bolts. If you already know you’ll do both, a two-tool combo kit on one battery platform is the best value going.

What each tool actually does

A drill/driver has a keyless chuck that grips round or hex bits, an adjustable clutch, and smooth, controllable torque. It drills pilot holes, drives screws to an exact depth, mixes thin-set, and spins hole saws. It’s the tool you reach for nine times out of ten, and for a lot of people it’s the only power tool they ever truly need.

An impact driver is smaller and lighter, takes only 1/4-inch hex-shank bits, and delivers rapid rotational “impacts” on top of its spin. That burst of force sinks long fasteners and lag bolts that would stall a drill — without you leaning on it, and without camming out and chewing up the screw head. It has no clutch and no fine speed control, so it trades finesse for raw driving power.

The clutch is the quiet hero of the drill/driver: those numbered settings let the tool slip before it over-drives, which is what keeps you from cracking trim or burying a screw too deep.

When the impact driver wins

Reach for the impact any time you’re driving fasteners longer than about two inches — lag bolts, structural screws, ledger boards, or a fistful of deck screws where a drill would bog down and fight you. Building a deck or a fence, hanging cabinets, assembling flat-pack furniture by the dozen: the impact does it faster, with far less wrist strain, and it rarely strips a head because the hammering keeps the bit seated. Pair it with a set of impact-rated driver bits — standard bits can shatter under the repeated blows.

When the drill/driver wins

Any time you’re making a hole or need control: pilot holes with twist drill bits, spade and auger bits, a hole saw through a door, mixing paint or thin-set, and driving screws into finish work where the clutch protects the surface. An impact’s pounding is overkill for a cabinet hinge and will split delicate material or snap a small brass screw. If you own only one tool, this is the one — a decent 18V/20V drill and a good bit set covers the vast majority of home projects.

Can one tool do both?

Not really, and the near-misses are worth knowing. A hammer drill is not an impact driver — it adds a forward pounding motion for boring into brick and concrete, not the rotational impacts that drive fasteners. Some drills accept hex bits and can push a long screw in a pinch, but they’ll strain, overheat, and cam out where an impact wouldn’t. There’s no true single-tool substitute; if your projects lean heavy on fasteners, plan for both from the start.

This is also where the battery platform matters. Sticking to one brand’s system — DeWalt, Milwaukee, Makita, or Ryobi for value — means your drill, your impact, and every future tool share the same batteries and charger. A combo kit that bundles a drill and impact on one platform almost always costs less than buying the two separately, and it’s the smartest way to start.

A quick buying checklist

  • Voltage: 18V or 20V MAX is the sweet spot for home use; 12V is lighter for cabinets and light-duty work.
  • Brushless motor: worth it — more runtime, more power, longer tool life than an older brushed motor.
  • Batteries: two batteries in the kit means one always charging. Match the platform to any tools you already own.
  • Chuck size: a 1/2-inch chuck on the drill handles bigger bits than a 3/8-inch.
  • Bits: buy impact-rated bits for the impact; standard bits are fine in the drill.

Do I need both a drill and an impact driver?
