A ceiling fan cools a room for pennies a day and makes any space feel finished — but a fan is a 15–25 pound machine spinning over your head, wired to live power. Do it right and it runs silent for a decade. Do it wrong and you get a wobble, a dead circuit, or a fixture that pulls out of the ceiling. This guide walks you through both the electrical and the mechanical side, safely.

Kill the power at the breaker and confirm it’s dead, mount a fan-rated ceiling box, hang the bracket, match the wires (white-to-white, black-to-black, ground-to-ground), balance the blades, and test. The single most important step is the box: a standard light box is not rated to hold a moving fan.
Most fans ship with the wire connectors (wire nuts) and mounting screws in the box, but keep a spare handful of connectors and a little extra 14- or 12-gauge wire on hand in case a lead is too short.
Go to the breaker panel and switch off the circuit that feeds the fixture — not just the wall switch. Flipping the wall switch off is not enough; the box can still be live. Back at the fixture, hold your non-contact voltage tester against the wires after you expose them and confirm it stays silent. Test the tester on a known-live outlet first so you know it’s working.
Safety first: If you open the box and find more wires than you expected, aluminum wiring, or scorched insulation, stop and call a licensed electrician. Overhead electrical work is one of the fair places to hand off to a pro.
Unscrew the existing light or fan and let it hang by its wires while you disconnect them. Now look hard at the box in the ceiling. If it’s a thin metal or plastic light box screwed only to drywall, it must be replaced with a fan-rated box. A fan-rated box is either screwed into a joist or mounted on an expanding brace bar that spans between joists and carries the moving load. This is non-negotiable — a wobbling fan on a light box is how fans end up on the floor.
Install the brace bar through the hole and ratchet it tight between the joists, then attach the fan box to it. Feed the house wiring through the box. Next, screw the fan’s mounting bracket to the box using the bolts supplied with the fan — usually with rubber washers that reduce noise. Give the bracket a firm tug; it should not budge. A cordless drill/driver makes quick work of the screws, but snug the final turns by hand so you don’t strip the box.
On the ground, attach the downrod (for standard ceilings) or use the flush-mount adapter (for ceilings under 8 feet). Thread the fan’s wires up through the downrod as you go and don’t forget the canopy — it has to slide on before the downrod is pinned. Most fans want the blades attached after hanging, but check your instructions; some are easier to blade-up first. Keep the mounting hardware in a small tray or cup so nothing rolls off the ladder.
Pro tip: The ball-and-socket hanger on most fans has a slot that keys onto a tab in the bracket. Seat it fully or the fan will hang crooked and wobble no matter how well you balance the blades later.
Hang the fan on the bracket hook so your hands are free. Match the wires: white (neutral) to white, the fan’s black (fan motor) to the house black (hot), and the fan’s blue lead (light kit) to black or a separate switch leg depending on how you want it controlled. Connect the bare copper or green ground to the house ground and the green screw on the bracket. Twist each pair clockwise, cap with a wire connector until no bare copper shows, and give a tug. Wrap a turn of electrical tape around each connector as backup. Tuck the wires neatly into the box and raise the canopy.

Screw on the blades one at a time, keeping the screws even. Wire and clip on the light kit if your fan has one, then install bulbs — LED is the easy choice for a fixture you rarely reach. Restore power at the breaker and test every speed plus the light. A little wobble is normal at first; if it persists, use the balancing kit that came with the fan (a clip and stick-on weights) to find the heavy blade. A quick check with a level on each blade tip can reveal a bent bracket before you chase balance weights.

Yes, as long as you replace the electrical box with a fan-rated one. A standard light box is not built to hold the weight and motion of a fan, so the box must be swapped for one rated for fan support and anchored to a joist or a brace bar.
If a switched fixture already exists in the ceiling and the box is fan-rated, most confident DIYers can do it in an hour or two. Call a licensed electrician if there is no existing box, if you find aluminum wiring or scorched insulation, or if you need to run a new circuit.
The most common causes are a hanger ball that is not fully seated in the bracket, loose blade or mounting screws, or a slightly warped blade. Tighten everything first, confirm the ball is keyed into its slot, then use the balancing kit that came with the fan to correct a heavy blade.
As a rough guide, rooms up to about 75 square feet suit a 29 to 36 inch fan, up to 175 square feet a 42 to 48 inch fan, and larger rooms a 52 inch or bigger fan. Center it in the room with at least 18 inches of blade clearance from any wall.
Blades should sit at least 7 feet off the floor and ideally 8 to 9 feet for the best airflow. Use a flush mount on ceilings under 8 feet and a downrod on taller ceilings to bring the fan down to the ideal height.
