GFCI vs. AFCI: Which Outlet Goes Where

GFCI and AFCI look almost identical on the shelf, cost about the same, and solve completely different problems — one keeps you from getting shocked, the other keeps your wiring from starting a fire. Put the wrong one in the wrong room and you’ll either fail an inspection or, worse, skip protection you actually needed. Here’s exactly which goes where.

The short answer

GFCI protects people from shock and goes anywhere near water — kitchens, baths, garages, basements, laundry, and outdoors. AFCI protects your home from electrical-fire-causing arcs and goes in living spaces — bedrooms, living rooms, hallways, and closets. Many kitchen and laundry circuits now need both, and a single dual-function (DF) device does the job of both in one outlet or one breaker. When in doubt, dual-function covers you.

GFCI vs. AFCI: two devices, two totally different jobs

Both are safety devices that live in your electrical system, and both can trip a circuit — but they’re watching for opposite kinds of trouble. A GFCI (ground-fault circuit interrupter) watches for electricity leaking off its intended path, the way it does when a hair dryer falls in a sink or a person becomes the path to ground. It reacts to a leak as small as 4 to 6 milliamps and cuts power in a fraction of a second — fast enough to stop a shock from becoming an electrocution.

An AFCI (arc-fault circuit interrupter) is listening for something else entirely: the tiny, sputtering electrical arcs that come from a nail through a wire, a chewed cord, a loose screw on a receptacle, or aging insulation. Those arcs throw enough heat to ignite wood and insulation inside a wall, and they’re the leading cause of home electrical fires. GFCI saves the person; AFCI saves the house.

Where GFCI is required (follow the water)

The easy rule for GFCI: if water can reach it, protect it. Modern code (and plain common sense) calls for GFCI protection on outlets and receptacles anywhere moisture is in play. That means bathrooms, kitchen counter outlets, garages, unfinished basements, crawlspaces, laundry areas, wet bars, and every outdoor receptacle. Around pools, hot tubs, and utility sinks it’s non-negotiable.

You get GFCI two ways: a GFCI receptacle (the outlet with the TEST and RESET buttons) or a GFCI breaker in the panel that protects the whole circuit. The receptacle is cheaper and easier for a homeowner to swap, and one GFCI outlet wired correctly can protect every ordinary outlet downstream of it on the same circuit. Brands like Leviton, Eaton, and Legrand’s Pass & Seymour make self-testing versions that check their own guts automatically — worth the couple extra dollars.

Tip: outdoor and damp-location GFCI outlets need a weather-resistant (WR) receptacle plus an in-use “bubble” cover from the weatherproof cover aisle. A regular indoor plate on an exterior wall won’t pass and won’t last.

Where AFCI is required (follow where you sleep and live)

AFCI protection is about the branch circuits running through your finished living space, where a hidden arc behind drywall is most dangerous. Current code requires AFCI on the circuits feeding bedrooms, living rooms, family rooms, dens, dining rooms, hallways, closets, sunrooms, and laundry areas — essentially the whole habitable interior. Because AFCI has to monitor the entire length of wire, it’s most often installed as an AFCI breaker in the panel rather than at the outlet, though AFCI and dual-function receptacles do exist for retrofits.

Retrofitting AFCI breakers into an older panel is the one job here where you should think hard about calling a licensed electrician: it means working inside a live load center, and the breaker has to match your panel brand exactly — a Square D breaker won’t fit a Siemens or Eaton panel. Nuisance tripping is also more common with AFCI, because certain older motors and electronics mimic an arc signature.

The rooms where you need both

Kitchens and laundry rooms are the tricky ones, because they’re living spaces (AFCI territory) that also have water and appliances (GFCI territory). Under modern code those circuits need both kinds of protection. Rather than stacking a GFCI outlet on an AFCI breaker — which can cause maddening double trips — the clean answer is a single dual-function device that handles arc faults and ground faults together.

*Requirements tighten with each code cycle and vary by local jurisdiction — some areas already push AFCI into more spaces. When you’re not sure, dual-function protection is never wrong, and it’s the safe default for any circuit you can’t categorize cleanly.

Installing and testing it right

The single most common wiring mistake is the LINE/LOAD mix-up on a GFCI receptacle. The incoming power feeds the LINE terminals; the LOAD terminals carry protection to the outlets downstream. Reverse them and the GFCI won’t protect anything past it — and it may not reset at all. Kill the breaker, confirm it’s dead with a voltage tester, and follow the LINE/LOAD labels exactly.

  • Turn off the circuit and verify. Never trust the label on the panel — test the wires themselves before touching them.
  • Check the box fit. GFCI and DF receptacles are bulky; a shallow or crowded electrical box may need upsizing so you can seat it without pinching the wires.
  • Match wire gauge to the breaker. 15-amp circuits use 14-gauge, 20-amp circuits use 12-gauge — don’t mix them.
  • Test monthly. Press TEST; power should cut. Press RESET to restore it. A device that won’t trip on TEST is dead and must be replaced.

Bathroom, kitchen sink, garage, basement, or outdoors? You need GFCI — a GFCI receptacle is the easy homeowner swap, and it protects the outlets downstream too. Outside, use a weather-resistant unit with a bubble cover.

Why does my AFCI breaker keep tripping?

AFCI breakers can nuisance-trip when an appliance produces an electrical signature that mimics a real arc, which is common with some older motors, vacuums, and electronics. It can also signal a genuine problem such as a loose connection, a damaged cord, or a shared neutral wired incorrectly. Try unplugging devices one at a time to find the culprit, and if it keeps tripping with nothing plugged in, have an electrician inspect the wiring.

Should GFCI be an outlet or a breaker?

Either works. A GFCI receptacle is cheaper and easier for a homeowner to install, and one correctly wired outlet can protect all the ordinary outlets downstream on that circuit. A GFCI breaker protects the entire circuit from the panel and is handy when you want protection without a bulky device at every location. Choose the outlet for simple swaps and the breaker for whole-circuit coverage.
