A pegboard turns a blank stretch of wall into the most-used square footage in your shop—every tool visible, everything within reach. Get the material, hole size, and mounting depth right and it lasts decades; get them wrong and you’re staring at a sagging panel with hooks that won’t stay put.
For a home garage or workshop, 1/4″ tempered hardboard on 1/2″ furring strips is the sweet spot—cheap, easy to cut, and it holds standard 1/4″ peg hooks. Step up to a metal or heavy-duty polymer panel only if you’re hanging power tools, batteries, or anything over about 5 lbs per hook. The single most common mistake is mounting the board flat against the wall: without a 1/2″ air gap behind it, the hooks physically can’t seat.
Pegboard comes in three broad families, and the one you pick sets your weight limit, your hook style, and your budget. Standard tempered hardboard (the familiar brown Masonite-style panel) is inexpensive, takes paint well, and handles the vast majority of hand-tool loads. Metal pegboard—steel or aluminum—shrugs off heavy tools and won’t warp in a humid garage. Polymer and PVC panels resist moisture entirely, wipe clean, and suit a garden shed or laundry room where damp is a fact of life.
If you’re building out a full wall of modular tool storage, mixing materials is fine: a metal panel behind the bench for drills and drivers, hardboard along the side wall for clamps, files, and layout tools. Match the panel to the load in front of it.

There are two standard hole sizes, and buying the wrong hooks for your board is the classic pegboard headache. 1/4″ holes on 1″ centers are the heavy-duty standard—this is what you want for a shop, and it accepts the sturdiest hooks. 1/8″ holes on 1″ centers is the lighter pattern common on thin craft panels. The hole diameter, not the board, dictates which peg hooks will fit.
Tip: before you buy a bag of hooks, measure an existing hole with calipers or a drill bit. A 1/4″ bit that slides in cleanly means you need 1/4″ hooks—1/8″ hooks in a 1/4″ hole will pull right back out under load.
Every hook has a leg that bends back and hooks into the hole behind the panel. If the board sits flat against drywall, that leg has nowhere to go. You need at least a 1/2″ standoff. Three ways to get it:
Whichever route you take, hit the studs. A loaded pegboard is heavy, and drywall anchors alone will tear out over time. Find your framing, mark it, and drive at least four screws into wood on a full 2×4-foot panel.
Standard panels run 2×4 feet and 4×4 feet; the big 4×8 sheet is a full wall. Buy more coverage than you think you need—shops fill up fast, and an empty column today is a cordless-drill charging station tomorrow. Before you commit hooks, lay the panel on the floor, arrange your most-used tools on it, and trace each one with a marker. That outline tells you exactly where hooks go and doubles as a “put it back here” guide later.
Group by task: fastening tools near the bench, layout and measuring tools by the saw, and reserve a low corner for a small shelf or bin rail. A pegboard pairs naturally with a workbench below it and open shelves and brackets above—think of the wall as one system, not just a hook grid.
The hooks do the real work, and there are more shapes than most people expect: single J-hooks for pliers, double-arm hooks for hammers, curved holders for cords, spring clips for spray cans, and small bins for screws and bits. Start with a mixed assortment pack, hang your tools, then buy the specific holders you find you’re short on. Look for hooks that lock or snap in—plain gravity hooks lift out every time you grab the tool, which gets old fast on a busy wall.

It depends on the material. Standard 1/4-inch tempered hardboard handles about 5 pounds per hook and a few hundred pounds spread across a full panel if it is screwed into studs. Metal panels hold 10 to 20-plus pounds per hook. The weak point is almost always the mounting, not the board, so anchor into framing.
Usually one of two reasons: the board is mounted flat against the wall with no gap behind it, so the hook leg cannot seat, or you are using 1/8-inch hooks in a 1/4-inch hole. Add a half-inch standoff and match the hook size to your holes. Locking or snap-in hooks also stay put far better than plain gravity hooks.
