The mask you grab off the shelf is the last thing standing between your lungs and a cloud of drywall dust, paint solvent, or old-house lead. A dollar dust mask and a proper NIOSH-rated respirator look almost identical — and protect you about as differently as a sun hat and a hard hat.
For sanding, sawdust, and general dusty work, a NIOSH-approved N95 is the honest minimum. For paint spraying, solvents, stains, or strippers you need a reusable half-mask respirator with organic-vapor (OV) cartridges — a particle mask does nothing against fumes. Buy for the specific hazard, and get one that actually seals to your face.
Almost everything on the wall of respiratory protection falls into one of three buckets, and picking the wrong bucket is the most common (and most dangerous) mistake.
Tip: a half-mask respirator costs about the same as a season’s worth of disposable masks and seals far better. If you do any recurring dusty or fume-heavy work, buy the reusable and stock cartridges.
Every legitimate particle filter carries a letter and a number, and both matter. The letter tells you how the filter holds up around oil (paint mists, lubricants, some pesticides). The number is the percentage of airborne particles it captures.

For most workshop and home jobs, an N95 is plenty. Step up to a P100 (usually the pink or magenta filter) when you’re dealing with lead paint, mold, silica from concrete or tile, or fine hardwood dust — the “P” means paint and oil mists won’t degrade it, and 100 (really 99.97%) is HEPA-grade capture.
This is where a dust mask fails people. Particles — dust, fibers, spray droplets — are physically strained out by a filter. Vapors and gases pass straight through any particle filter. To stop fumes you need a chemical cartridge packed with activated carbon that adsorbs the vapor, and the cartridge has to match the chemical.

If you’re rolling latex paint, an N95 is fine for the mist. The moment you pick up a sprayer, break out oil-based finishes, or open a can of stripper or solvent, you need OV cartridges — ideally an OV/P100 combo so it stops both the fumes and the atomized spray droplets. Cartridges have a shelf life once opened; if you can smell the chemical through the mask, they’re spent.
The best filter in the world does nothing if air sneaks around the edges. A respirator only works when it seals to bare skin. Run through this before you trust it:
Cutting, sanding, and general woodworking? A two-strap N95 handles it. Fine hardwood or MDF dust all day — go P100 and pair it with a shop vac at the tool.
Spraying, staining, or stripping means fumes. Reach for a half-mask with OV/P100 cartridges and ventilate the space — a particle mask alone won’t cut it.
Remediation, old-paint scraping, or masonry silica is serious. Use a P100 at minimum, seal well, and add gloves and coveralls.

The letter describes oil resistance. N means not oil-resistant, R means oil-resistant for a single shift, and P means oil-proof. The number is the filtration efficiency, so 95 captures 95% of particles and 100 captures 99.97%, which is HEPA-grade.
For a sealing respirator, yes. Even light stubble along the sealing edge lets contaminated air leak around the mask. If you keep facial hair, use a loose-fitting powered air-purifying respirator (PAPR) with a hood instead of a tight facepiece.
Replace particle filters when breathing gets noticeably harder or they get wet or damaged. Replace chemical cartridges on a schedule and immediately if you can smell or taste the chemical through the mask, which means the carbon is saturated. Opened cartridges also age, so date them.
Use a P100 filter at minimum, on a well-sealed half-mask. P100 is oil-proof and captures 99.97% of particles including mold spores and lead dust. Pair it with disposable gloves and coveralls, and contain the dust so it does not spread.
