An angle grinder is the most versatile — and most misunderstood — power tool in the shop. Pick the right size and power source and it will cut steel, grind welds, strip rust, and polish for years. Pick wrong and you’ll fight an underpowered tool or wrestle one that’s too big for the job.
For most homeowners and DIYers, a 4-1/2-inch grinder — corded at 7–9 amps or an 18V/20V cordless — is the sweet spot. It handles the overwhelming majority of cutting, grinding, and cleanup work. Step up to a 6- or 9-inch model only if you regularly cut thick steel or run big surface-prep discs.

Tip: a 4-1/2-inch grinder spins faster (around 11,000 RPM) than a 9-inch (around 6,000 RPM). Smaller wheels need higher speed to cut efficiently — never mount a wheel rated below the tool’s RPM.
Corded grinders give you unlimited runtime and the most power per dollar — a 7-amp corded tool from DeWalt, Makita, or Bosch will grind all day for well under the price of a comparable battery kit. If your work happens at a bench or near an outlet, corded is the value pick.
Cordless has closed the gap fast. An 18V or 20V grinder from Milwaukee, DeWalt, Ryobi, or Makita is now genuinely job-ready, especially with a brushless motor and a high-capacity battery. The freedom to cut a fence bolt in the yard or a gate hinge on a ladder — no cord, no generator — is worth a lot. If you’re already invested in one battery platform, staying in it is the easy call. Just keep spare batteries charged, because grinding draws hard and drains packs quickly.

Buy the right arbor size (7/8-inch is standard on 4-1/2-inch grinders) and confirm every wheel’s max RPM meets or exceeds your tool. Guards, backing flanges, and lock nuts wear out too — replacements live with the tool parts and attachments.
