A wire connector is the smallest part in the box and the one most likely to burn your house down. Choose the wrong type or size and you get a loose splice, an arc, and a hot spot behind the drywall — get it right and the joint outlasts the wire itself.
For most household 14- and 12-gauge copper splices, a lever connector (like a Wago 221) or a correctly sized twist-on wire nut is the right choice — lever-nuts for mixed gauges and fast, tool-free work; twist-ons when you want the cheapest proven splice. Match the connector to your wire gauge, conductor count, and material (copper vs. aluminum), and never splice outside a rated box.
Every wire connector is rated for a specific combination of wire size, number of conductors, and metal. Nail those three and the rest is preference. The color of a twist-on wire connector tells you its range — but color codes vary by brand, so read the printed spec on the jar, not the folklore.
Gauge is the big one. Residential branch circuits are almost always 14 AWG (15-amp lighting and receptacle circuits) or 12 AWG (20-amp circuits, kitchens, baths). Heavier 10 AWG shows up on water heaters and dryers. A connector rated only for 22–16 AWG will not bite a 12-gauge conductor, and a connector sized for three 12s will spin uselessly on a single small wire. Count your conductors before you buy.

Tip: for outdoor, damp, or buried splices, use a connector filled with dielectric sealant (like a King Innovation DryConn) or a proper waterproof terminal. A dry wire nut in a sprinkler valve box will corrode and fail within a season.
Twist-on wire nuts from Ideal (the Wing-Nut and Wire-Nut lines) and 3M have secured billions of joints and cost pennies each. They are the standard for a reason. The catch is technique — you must strip to the right length, hold the conductors even, and twist firmly until the spring bottoms out. A lazy twist-on is the classic cause of a flickering light and a warm switch plate.
Lever connectors flipped that on its head. You strip to a marked gauge, drop each wire into its own port, and snap the lever. Every conductor gets equal, independent clamping force, which is why they shine when you are joining a solid 14 to a stranded 12 — something twist-ons do poorly. They cost more per splice and take slightly more box volume, but for anyone who splices occasionally, the near-zero error rate is worth it. Keep both in your electrical kit.
If your home has aluminum branch wiring (common in mid-1960s to mid-1970s houses), do not reach for an ordinary connector. You need a connector specifically listed for aluminum-to-copper, such as the AlumiConn or the purple-bodied Ideal Twister AL/CU, plus an antioxidant compound. This is a genuine fire-safety issue, not a preference — if you are unsure whether your wiring is aluminum, that is the moment to call a licensed electrician.
Two rules that trip up beginners: every splice must live inside an approved, accessible electrical box with a cover — no splices buried in a wall or ceiling — and the box must have enough cubic-inch volume for the conductors and connectors inside it. Fill counts matter. When in doubt, size up the box.
The connector is only half the job. A dedicated wire stripper (Klein, Irwin) gives you a clean, nick-free strip at the exact gauge, which matters more than any connector choice. Add a lineman’s or long-nose set of pliers for twisting and dressing conductors, a non-contact voltage tester to prove the circuit is dead, and basic safety equipment. For automotive and trailer work, a ratcheting crimp tool and a spool of adhesive-lined electrical tape or heat-shrink butt splices will outlast a taped twist any day.
Swapping a fixture, fan, or receptacle with 14/12-gauge copper? Lever connectors for speed and mixed gauges, or twist-ons if you splice cleanly and want the lowest cost.
Landscape lighting, sprinkler valves, a junction in a damp box? Use gel-filled waterproof connectors rated for direct burial — never a bare wire nut.
Trailer wiring, 12-volt accessories, speaker runs? Crimped butt connectors and ring terminals with heat-shrink give a vibration-proof, permanent joint.

They are more forgiving. Lever connectors clamp each conductor independently, so they handle mixed gauges and solid-plus-stranded joints reliably with almost no technique error. Wire nuts are cheaper and proven, but depend on a correct twist. For occasional DIY work, lever connectors reduce mistakes; for high-volume pros watching cost, quality twist-ons are still standard.
It depends on the connector, not the color myth. Each wire nut prints a range such as 22 to 16 AWG or 14 to 10 AWG on the jar or packaging, along with how many conductors of each size it accepts. Match that printed range and conductor count to your splice — a nut that is too large will not grip a single small wire.

No. A properly installed twist-on connector does not require tape, and taping can hide a loose splice. If you want extra security in a vibration-prone or damp location, use a connector designed for it — a gel-filled waterproof type outdoors, or a crimped heat-shrink butt connector for automotive work — rather than wrapping tape.
Only inside an approved, accessible electrical box with a cover. Splices buried in a wall or ceiling with no box are a code violation and a fire risk. The box also needs enough cubic-inch volume for the number of conductors and connectors inside it, so size the box up when the fill gets tight.
