The right wood glue makes a joint stronger than the wood around it. The wrong one leaves you with a chair that wobbles by Thanksgiving, a cutting board that delaminates in the sink, or an outdoor bench that swells and cracks after the first hard rain. Matching the adhesive to the job is the difference between a repair that outlives you and one you redo next spring.
For most furniture and indoor woodworking, reach for a Type II water-resistant PVA (yellow) wood glue like Titebond II — it’s strong, sands clean, and cleans up with water. Step up to Titebond III for anything that gets wet or lives outside, and keep polyurethane (Gorilla Glue) or two-part epoxy on the shelf for gap-filling, oily woods, and gluing wood to metal or stone.
Before you compare brands, answer one question: will this joint ever get wet? Indoor furniture, picture frames, and shelving live in a stable, dry environment and are perfectly happy with a standard interior glue. A porch swing, a planter box, a bathroom vanity, or a cutting board faces moisture, humidity swings, and temperature changes that a basic glue simply can’t survive.
Wood glue is graded by water resistance. Type I is fully waterproof and passes a boil-and-soak test. Type II is water-resistant — fine for occasional dampness and covered outdoor use. Interior-only glues carry no rating. Buying up one grade “just in case” costs a couple dollars and saves you a rebuild, so most woodworkers keep a water-resistant glue as their default from the glue and adhesive aisle.
Each glue chemistry trades strength, working time, gap-filling, and cleanup differently. Here’s how the common ones actually behave on the bench.

Tip: PVA glue is only as good as its clamp pressure and its shelf life. Yellow glue that’s stringy, chunky, or older than about two years has lost strength — write the open date on the bottle and don’t trust a mystery jug.
For the overwhelming majority of projects — drawers, face frames, chairs, cabinets, cutting boards — a polyvinyl acetate (PVA) yellow glue is the correct answer. It bonds wood to wood stronger than the wood fibers themselves, dries to a hard, sandable line that takes stain reasonably well, and cleans up with plain water while wet. Titebond Original is the interior standard; Titebond II adds water resistance for kitchens and covered outdoor pieces; Titebond III is fully waterproof and has a longer open time for complex glue-ups.
PVA does have limits. It needs tight-fitting joints and real clamp pressure — it will not fill a sloppy gap, and a starved or under-clamped joint fails. That’s why a set of bar and pipe clamps is as important as the glue itself, and why loose joints often get reinforced with dowels or biscuits from the joinery aisle before the glue ever goes on.
Some jobs beat ordinary wood glue. Reach past PVA when:
For heavier construction — subfloor, paneling, treads, landscape timbers — a caulk-tube construction adhesive does what a squeeze bottle can’t. And when you’re filling a screw hole or a knot rather than joining two pieces, that’s a job for wood filler, not glue.
Three numbers on the bottle decide how your day goes. Open time (or assembly time) is how long you have to spread glue and get everything clamped before it skins over — roughly 4–5 minutes for Titebond Original, closer to 8–10 for Titebond III on a big glue-up. Clamp time is how long the clamps stay on: usually 30 minutes to an hour for PVA. Cure time is when the joint reaches full strength — typically 24 hours. Don’t stress a joint hard until it’s fully cured, even if it feels solid after lunch.
Cold shop? PVA glues generally need temperatures above about 50°F to cure properly, and the glue line turns chalky and weak if it’s applied too cold. If your garage dips below that, warm the wood and the glue first, or wait for a milder day.
Chairs, cabinets, bookshelves, trim. Titebond Original or II, tight joints, good clamp pressure. Reinforce stress points with dowels or pocket screws.
Cutting boards, outdoor furniture, bathroom builds, planters. Titebond III or waterproof polyurethane — anything less will creep and delaminate.

Yes. A properly clamped PVA joint on tight-fitting wood is stronger than the surrounding wood fibers, which is why a glued board breaks next to the joint rather than along it. That strength depends on a good fit, even glue coverage, and real clamp pressure — a starved or under-clamped joint is much weaker.
Both are yellow PVA glues, but Titebond III is fully waterproof (Type I), has a longer open time for complex glue-ups, and is FDA-approved for indirect food contact, making it the better pick for cutting boards and outdoor projects. Titebond II is water-resistant (Type II) and fine for kitchens and covered outdoor use at a slightly lower price.
Keep clamps on a PVA joint for at least 30 minutes to an hour, and don’t stress the joint until it has cured a full 24 hours. Clamp time gets the joint to handling strength; cure time gets it to full strength. Complex or load-bearing glue-ups benefit from leaving the clamps on longer.
Standard PVA struggles on oily, dense woods such as teak, ipe, and rosewood because the natural oils prevent a good bond. Wipe the surface with acetone right before gluing and use epoxy or polyurethane adhesive instead, which grip these species far more reliably.
Only if it is rated for it. Use a Type II water-resistant or Type I waterproof glue such as Titebond III, or a waterproof polyurethane or epoxy. Interior-only glue will creep, swell, and let the joint fail after the wood goes through wet-and-dry cycles outside.
