A GFCI outlet is the little device that cuts power in a fraction of a second when it senses current leaking — the difference between a startled jump and a trip to the ER. Installing one is one of the most satisfying hour-long upgrades in the house, but it’s also live electrical work, so getting the wiring and the “LINE vs. LOAD” terminals right is everything.
Difficulty: Intermediate · about 30–60 minutes per outlet. Kill the power at the breaker, confirm it’s dead with a tester, then swap the old receptacle for a GFCI — landing the incoming (LINE) wires on the LINE terminals and any downstream wires on LOAD. Test the buttons, and you’ve added real shock protection to a kitchen, bath, garage, or outdoor circuit.
Go to your electrical panel and switch off the breaker feeding the outlet you’re replacing. If your breakers aren’t labeled, plug a lamp or radio into the outlet and flip breakers until it goes dark. This is the step people skip and regret — do not rely on the switch on the wall or a “probably that one” guess.
Non-negotiable: once the breaker is off, hold your non-contact tester against the outlet and confirm it reads nothing. Then remove the cover plate and test again at the screw terminals. Two dead readings, then you touch wire — not before.
Unscrew the two mounting screws and gently pull the old receptacle out of the electrical box. Before you disconnect anything, look at what’s there. A simple outlet has one hot (black), one neutral (white), and a bare or green ground. Many boxes have two cables — one bringing power in, and one carrying it onward to other outlets downstream. Snap a quick photo with your phone; it’s the cheapest insurance you have.
This is the part that makes GFCIs different from a plain outlet. The GFCI must protect everything downstream of it, so the incoming power has to land on the terminals marked LINE. If you have two cables and aren’t sure which is which, separate the wires so nothing touches, cap the bare ends with wire connectors, turn the breaker back on, and use your tester to find which black wire is hot. That’s your LINE. Turn the power back off before continuing.
Common mistake: reversing LINE and LOAD. If you wire the incoming power to the LOAD terminals, the GFCI often won’t reset, or it will power the outlet but provide zero protection. When in doubt and there’s only one cable, use only the LINE terminals and leave LOAD covered by its factory tape.
Strip about 3/4″ of insulation off each wire if the ends look nicked or corroded. Connect the incoming black to the brass LINE screw and the incoming white to the silver LINE screw. If you have a downstream cable to protect, land its black and white on the brass and silver LOAD screws. Connect all ground wires to the green screw — pigtail them with a wire nut and a short jumper if there’s more than one. Tighten every terminal firmly; a loose connection is a fire waiting to happen. Some electricians wrap a band of electrical tape around the body to shield the side screws.
Fold the wires back into the box in an accordion shape so they don’t get pinched, and push the GFCI in square. Drive the two mounting screws until the device sits flush and level, then add your new decora cover plate. Don’t overtighten the plate screws — you’ll crack the plate, and the GFCI’s own body is what should be snug against the box.
Flip the breaker back on. The GFCI should power up; if it has a status light, check it against the instructions (green usually means protected). Press TEST — the RESET button should pop out and the outlet should go dead. Press RESET to restore it. If you protected downstream outlets, plug a lamp into one and confirm it also dies when you press TEST. A plug-in outlet tester with a GFCI trip button is a great final check for correct wiring and grounding.

Modern code calls for GFCI protection in kitchens, bathrooms, garages, unfinished basements, laundry areas, outdoors, and anywhere within six feet of a sink. If a room gets wet or is near water, it should be protected.
LINE terminals receive the incoming power from your panel. LOAD terminals send protected power to other outlets downstream. Get these backward and the GFCI usually won’t reset, or it will offer no protection at all.
Yes. A GFCI works by comparing current on the hot and neutral, so it protects people even on older two-wire circuits. Label it “No Equipment Ground” using the stickers in the box, and don’t assume grounded three-prong devices are truly grounded.
An immediate trip usually means a real ground fault downstream, moisture in a box, or a wiring mistake such as a neutral touching ground. Recheck your connections; if it keeps tripping with nothing plugged in, stop and call an electrician.
A GFCI breaker at the panel protects the entire circuit and can be tidier, but installing one means working inside a live panel. That job is best left to a licensed electrician; a GFCI receptacle is the safer DIY route.
