Pick the wrong pipe and you’re either paying twice the material cost, voiding a code inspection, or gluing a joint that will weep for years. The good news: for most home projects the right answer is clear once you know where each pipe belongs — and where it absolutely doesn’t.
For interior hot- and cold-water supply lines, PEX is the easiest and most forgiving choice for DIYers. Use copper where you want maximum durability, heat tolerance, or an exposed run that has to look sharp. Save PVC and ABS for drain, waste, and vent (DWV) — never for pressurized hot water. When in doubt, match what your local code inspector expects.
The single biggest mistake we see at the counter is treating “pipe” as one category. It isn’t. PEX and copper are supply materials — they carry pressurized drinking water to your fixtures. PVC and ABS are drainage materials — they move waste water and vent gases by gravity, with no pressure behind them. White PVC and CPVC look similar but are worlds apart: standard white PVC softens under hot water, while CPVC (usually cream or tan) is rated for it. Mix these up and you get a slow failure that shows up months later inside a wall.
So before you compare price, sort your run into the right job. A bathroom remodel usually needs supply line to the sink, toilet, and tub, plus PVC drain pipe and vent below. Those are two different shopping trips with two different materials.

Tip: PEX comes in red, blue, and white. The colors are just for your own organization — hot, cold, and either — not a code requirement. Buy whatever’s in stock and label your manifold instead.
PEX (cross-linked polyethylene) won over homeowners for one reason: no open flame. You cut it with a scissor-style cutter and join it with a crimp ring or an expansion fitting — a single tool and a bag of PEX fittings gets you through a whole house. It flexes around corners, so a bathroom that would take a dozen copper elbows might need two. Brands like SharkBite, Apollo, and Uponor dominate the aisle, and their push-to-connect couplings let you tie into existing copper or CPVC without any special tool at all.
The trade-offs: PEX can’t be run in direct sunlight, it shouldn’t connect directly to a water heater (use an 18-inch copper or metal stub-out), and rodents have been known to chew it in unfinished spaces. For an interior repipe, though, it’s the fastest path to a leak-free system. Keep a few push-to-connect fittings on hand for emergency repairs — they work on copper, PEX, and CPVC interchangeably.
Copper has plumbed homes for a century and still sets the bar for longevity and heat tolerance. It doesn’t degrade in sunlight, handles high temperatures without a thought, and an exposed copper run in a utility room or craft space simply looks better than plastic. Type L (thicker wall) is the common residential choice; Type M is thinner and cheaper where code allows.
The catch is the skill. Soldering a watertight joint means cleaning the pipe, applying flux, and heating evenly with a propane torch — a learnable skill, but one with a learning curve and a fire risk near framing. You’ll need a tubing cutter, flux, lead-free solder, and a torch from the soldering supplies aisle, plus a stock of copper fittings. If you’d rather skip the flame, press fittings and push-connect couplings join copper without solder — they cost more per fitting but save the torch entirely.
PVC is the white pipe under nearly every sink in America. It’s cheap, light, cuts with a handsaw or ratchet cutter, and joins with primer and solvent cement — a chemical weld that’s permanent once set. It’s ideal for drain, waste, and vent, and for cold-water irrigation. What it is not rated for is pressurized hot water; that heat softens standard PVC over time.
CPVC (the cream-colored cousin) is rated for hot supply and is common in the South and in manufactured homes. It uses its own cement, not PVC cement — don’t cross them. For any solvent-weld joint, always prime first and give it the full cure time on the can before you pressurize. A good tube of pipe joint compound or thread sealant handles the threaded metal connections that cement can’t.
Go PEX. One tool, flexible runs, and freeze resistance make a weekend repipe realistic. Stub out to the water heater in copper and you’re to code in most jurisdictions.
Choose copper. Basements, mechanical rooms, and anywhere near a boiler or heat source reward copper’s heat tolerance and clean looks.
Use PVC. Gravity drainage and cold irrigation are exactly what it’s built for — cheap, fast, and permanent once cemented.
