Some knives get used. This one gets handed down.
You have seen this knife before. That distinctive yellow handle brightens the whole Yellow Synthetic family while keeping its toughness — which is a big part of why the Trapper is one of the most beloved knives in the Case line, and why you can still spot it in the bottom of a tackle box thirty years later.
That is exactly why we stock it. It is not a gadget. It is the kind of thing you buy once, use for decades, and then give to somebody.
- Two full-length blades
- 4.13” closed
- Mirror-polished carbon steel
- Non-locking slip joint
- Smooth Yellow Synthetic handle
- Made in Bradford, PA
Named for the work it was built for
The Trapper gets its name from the consumer it was designed for. Basic trapping and skinning blades, light weight, nothing extra — a must-have for anyone trapping small game, and the reason the pattern outlived the job description. It is a jack knife with two full-length blades, and each one has a role.
Blade one · 3.25”
Slender clip
Commonly used as the multi-purpose blade, and the one preferred for detail work. Concave-ground, mirror-polished, with a standard nail mark.
Blade two · 3.27”
Long spey
Commonly used as the all-purpose utility blade — the everyday cutting that would otherwise dull your detail edge. Two blades in one handle means you never have to choose.
Straight talk: this is a non-locking slip joint.
Case lists the lock type as Non-Locking (Slip Joint). The backspring holds the blade open under real tension, but it does not lock — this is the traditional pattern, built the traditional way. Open it deliberately, keep your fingers clear of the closing path, use two hands to shut it, and don’t use it as a pry bar. That is the honest trade for a slim knife that disappears in a pocket. (Carry rules vary by state and city — check yours.)
High carbon steel, and what it asks of you
These are high carbon steel blades, mirror-polished, stamped 3254 CS. Case points to their high tensile strength, wear resistance, and toughness — and many people prefer this steel specifically for its edge retention and its ease of re-sharpening. It takes an edge, it keeps it, and when it finally dulls it comes back without a fight.
The trade-off is honest, and we would rather you hear it from us than learn it the hard way: these are not stainless steel blades. A thin coat of oil applied after each use helps maintain their original finish. Do that and this is a knife you hand to somebody. Skip it and you will be dealing with the consequences in a season.

The details you pay for
-
Smooth Yellow Synthetic handle. High-visibility yellow, fitted with the Case oval shield.
-
Mirror-polished blades. Both blades are finished, not just ground.
-
Engravable. Case lists this pattern as engravable — worth knowing if it is going to somebody.
-
Comes conveniently packaged in a box. Ready to give without a wrapping job.
-
Limited lifetime warranty. Backed by Case.
Keep it for the long haul
-
Oil it after each use. A thin coat on the blades helps maintain their original finish. With non-stainless steel, this is the whole ballgame.
-
Keep it dry. These blades are not stainless — put it away wet and you will regret it.
-
Oil the joint too. A drop at each pivot keeps a slip joint snapping the way it should.
-
Touch it up, don’t grind it. This steel re-sharpens easily; a few strokes on a fine stone beats a hard re-profile once a year.

Questions people actually ask
- Does the blade lock open?
- No. Case lists the lock type as Non-Locking (Slip Joint) — the backspring holds it open firmly, but it is not a locking knife. Close it with two hands and keep fingers out of the path.
- These aren’t stainless. What does that mean for me?
- It means maintenance. Apply a thin coat of oil to the blades after each use to help maintain their original finish. That is Case’s own guidance, and it is not optional.
- So why carbon steel at all?
- High tensile strength, wear resistance, and toughness — and many people prefer it for its edge retention and how easily it re-sharpens. You trade a little maintenance for that.
- Which blade do I use for what?
- The slender clip is commonly used as the multi-purpose blade and is preferred for detail work. The long spey is commonly used as the all-purpose utility blade.
- Is it a good gift?
- It arrives conveniently packaged in a box, it is engravable, and it carries a limited lifetime warranty. It is one of the few gifts left that actually gets handed down.
