A drain spade earns its name by going where a standard shovel can't - into narrow trenches, along foundation lines, and through root-bound soil where you need a long, narrow blade instead of a wide scoop. This Truper model pairs a 16" steel blade with a full steel handle, so the whole tool is built to take the abuse of digging through clay, rocky ground, or compacted fill without the handle giving out first.
The D-handle grip gives you better control and leverage for twisting and prying as you work the blade down, while the molded foot step lets you drive it deeper using your body weight instead of just your arms. The coated blade sheds wet soil and mud more easily, which matters when you're digging drain lines or utility trenches in less-than-ideal conditions. At 48" overall and just over 5 lbs, it's sized for real digging work - trenching for drain pipe, cutting clean edges, or working in tight spots where a round-point shovel is too wide.
