How to Choose a Dehumidifier

A musty basement, foggy windows, or that faint mildew smell in the laundry room all point to one thing: too much moisture in the air. The right dehumidifier fixes it quietly and cheaply — the wrong one runs all day, spikes your power bill, and still leaves the corners damp.

The short answer

Match capacity to your space and how damp it is. For most basements and damp rooms, a 35–50 pint Energy Star unit with a built-in humidistat and a continuous-drain hose port is the sweet spot. Buy a bigger pint rating than you think you need — oversizing costs pennies more to run and keeps up on the worst days.

How dehumidifier capacity actually works

Dehumidifiers are rated in pints of water removed per day. That number is the single biggest spec, but the testing standard changed in 2019, so a “30-pint” unit today pulls what an old “50-pint” unit did. Don’t compare a new box to an old label — compare current pint ratings to each other.

Capacity should scale with two things: the square footage you’re treating and how wet the space already is. A slightly damp bedroom needs far less than a basement that smells musty and shows condensation on the cold-water pipes. When in doubt, size up. A larger unit reaches your target humidity faster, then cycles off — it doesn’t run harder just because it’s bigger.

Tip: A basement with any history of seepage should pair the dehumidifier with proper drainage — the machine handles airborne moisture, not water coming through the wall. Fix the water source with grading, gutters, or a sump or utility pump first.

Refrigerant vs. desiccant: which type fits

Nearly every whole-room dehumidifier you’ll buy is refrigerant (compressor-based). It chills a coil, water condenses out, and it’s efficient in normal household temperatures. Brands like Frigidaire, GE, hOmeLabs, and Honeywell all build these. The catch: they lose efficiency below about 60°F because the coil frosts up, though most now include auto-defrost.

A desiccant dehumidifier uses a moisture-absorbing wheel instead of a compressor. It works better in cold spaces — an unheated garage, a crawlspace, a cabin in winter — and runs lighter and quieter. It uses more electricity per pint at room temperature, so it’s a niche pick for cold or small spaces, not your main basement unit.

Drainage: the feature that decides how often you touch it

Every dehumidifier collects water somewhere. You have three ways to empty it, and this choice matters more day-to-day than the pint rating:

  • Manual bucket — you dump a 1–2 gallon tank. Fine for a lightly damp room, miserable for a wet basement where it fills twice a day.
  • Gravity drain — attach a garden hose and let water run to a floor drain or lower point. No emptying, ever. This is the setup most basement owners want. Have a spare length of hose and the right fittings ready.
  • Built-in condensate pump — pushes water up and out through a small tube to a sink or window when there’s no drain below the unit. The most convenient, priciest option.

If your space has a floor drain, buy any unit with a hose port and set it to continuous gravity drain. If it doesn’t, spend up for the built-in pump — it’s the difference between a set-and-forget appliance and a daily chore.

The specs worth paying for

Beyond capacity and drainage, a few features separate a good unit from a frustrating one:

  • Built-in humidistat — set a target (45–50% is ideal) and the unit cycles to hold it instead of running non-stop. Essential for both comfort and your power bill.
  • Energy Star rating — a dehumidifier runs a lot of hours; the efficient models pay back the difference fast.
  • Auto-defrost — keeps a refrigerant unit working in a cool basement without frosting the coil.
  • Auto-restart — resumes your settings after a power blip, so it doesn’t sit off for a week while you’re away.
  • Caster wheels and a top handle — a full unit is heavy; you’ll move it to empty or clean it.
  • Washable filter — protects the coil and keeps airflow up. Rinse it monthly.

Controlling humidity is also the cheapest mold prevention there is. Pair the unit with good air purification and dedicated moisture and mildew control products in closets and crawlspaces for the corners airflow won’t reach.

Placement and running it right

Center the unit in the space with a few inches of clearance around the intake and exhaust so it can pull and push air freely. Keep doors and windows to the damp area closed — you’re dehumidifying that room, not the whole outdoors. In a finished basement, a ceiling fan or the HVAC blower helps move dried air around so one corner isn’t doing all the work. And check your furnace filters while you’re at it — a clean HVAC system moves and conditions air far better.

COLD GARAGE OR CRAWLSPACE
