How to Choose a Thermostat

A thermostat is the cheapest upgrade that touches every dollar you spend on heating and cooling — and the one most people buy blind. Pick the wrong type for your system and you get flashing error codes, a dead furnace, or a “smart” unit that never learns a thing.

The short answer

Before you shop, pull your old thermostat off the wall and count the wires — the make-or-break question is whether you have a C (common) wire, because most smart thermostats need one for steady power. For the majority of central gas/electric homes, a programmable or smart thermostat like a Honeywell, Emerson Sensi, or Google Nest is the right call. If you have line-voltage baseboard heat or a heat pump with aux/emergency heat, buy a thermostat specifically rated for that — a standard low-voltage model will fry or misfire.

Step one: identify your system, not the brand you want

The thermostat aisle looks like a phone store, but the only thing that matters first is what your HVAC system speaks. Get this wrong and nothing else counts. There are three broad families, and yours is easy to spot once you know the tells.

Low-voltage (24V) covers the vast majority of homes: central gas furnace, central AC, oil, or a heat pump. The wires behind your old thermostat are thin and multicolored (red, white, yellow, green, blue). This is the sweet spot where nearly every modern thermostat lives. Line-voltage (120V/240V) runs electric baseboard heaters and some fan-coil units — the wires are thick, often black, and there’s no transformer. You need a thermostat explicitly labeled “line voltage” and rated for your amperage. Millivolt systems power some floor and wall heaters and gas fireplaces off the pilot flame itself; they need a dedicated millivolt-compatible control, which you’ll find alongside other HVAC controls.

Tip: Snap a phone photo of your current wiring before you disconnect anything, with the letter next to each terminal visible. It’s the single best insurance against a bad reinstall — and it tells you instantly whether you have a C wire.

The C wire question — and how to solve it

Older thermostats ran on battery power and only used a couple of wires to switch the system on and off. Smart thermostats have bright screens and Wi-Fi radios that need constant power, and that’s what the C (common) wire delivers. No C wire, no reliable smart thermostat — unless you plan around it.

You have three options if you’re missing a common wire: run a new wire (easy if the furnace is in an accessible basement, a pain otherwise), use a manufacturer’s add-a-wire adapter or power extender kit that ships with many Nest and Ecobee units, or choose a thermostat that doesn’t require a C wire at all. Emerson’s Sensi line is popular precisely because it runs on the existing wires in most homes. If you’re running new low-voltage wire, keep a spool of thermostat wire and a set of circuit testers on hand to confirm what’s live before you touch a terminal.

Types of thermostat, from simplest to smartest

Once you know your system speaks 24V low-voltage, the choice is about how much control and automation you want. More features aren’t automatically better — a rental or a rarely-used cabin is happier with a dumb, dependable dial.

Brands worth knowing: Honeywell (now Resideo) makes the widest range and the most bulletproof programmables; Emerson Sensi is the go-to when a C wire is missing; Google Nest and ecobee lead the learning/smart category, with ecobee adding remote room sensors that fix the “one hot room” problem. For heat pumps specifically, look for models that natively support auxiliary and emergency heat staging.

Match the thermostat to your equipment stages

HVAC systems come in stages: single-stage (one speed), multi-stage (low and high), and heat pumps with backup electric or gas heat. Your thermostat has to support as many stages as your equipment has, or you lose efficiency and comfort. A single-stage thermostat on a two-stage furnace will run the whole thing on high all the time — loud, and it burns more fuel.

  • Single-stage gas/electric + AC: almost any low-voltage thermostat works.
  • Two-stage or variable-speed: buy a thermostat that lists 2H/2C (or multi-stage) support.
  • Heat pump: confirm it supports O/B reversing valve and aux/emergency heat, or the backup heat won’t engage on cold days.
  • Humidifier, dehumidifier, or ventilator tie-in: higher-end smart thermostats can control these; pair one with the right ventilation gear for whole-home comfort.

While you’re at the furnace, it’s the perfect moment to swap the air filter — a clogged filter makes even the smartest thermostat fight a losing battle, so keep spare furnace filters in the size your system takes.

Installation reality check

Swapping a like-for-like low-voltage thermostat is a genuine 30-minute DIY job: kill power at the breaker, label the wires by terminal letter, mount the new base, and reconnect. The trouble starts when you upgrade across categories — adding a C wire, moving from a heat-only to a heat-pump control, or wiring in a humidifier. If your wire count doesn’t match the new thermostat’s terminals, or you’re dealing with line voltage, that’s the moment to loop in a pro or ask the folks at your local hardware store to walk you through it.

Tip: Always turn the system off at the breaker, not just the thermostat, before disconnecting wires. Low-voltage won’t hurt you, but a shorted transformer is a $40 repair and a cold night.
