A hand saw is the tool you reach for when dragging out a power saw feels like overkill — and the wrong one turns a two-minute cut into a splintered, sweaty ordeal. The trick isn’t buying the biggest saw; it’s matching tooth count and blade shape to what you’re actually cutting.
For general around-the-house work, start with a 15–20 inch coarse-tooth handsaw (roughly 8–10 TPI) for cutting boards, and add a fine-tooth back saw or pull saw for trim and joinery. Match the tooth pattern to the cut: rip teeth for cutting with the grain, crosscut teeth for cutting across it. More teeth per inch means a slower but smoother cut.
Every hand saw decision comes down to one question: what material, and in which direction? Wood cut across the grain (crosscutting a 2x4 to length) wants a different tooth than wood cut along the grain (ripping a board narrower). Metal, plastic pipe, and drywall each want their own blade entirely. Buy for the job in front of you, then round out the drawer over time.
For most homeowners the workhorse is a traditional carpenter’s handsaw — the long, tapered blade you picture when someone says “saw.” It handles framing lumber, plywood, fence boards, and rough cuts without a second thought. From there you branch out based on how fine and how controlled your cuts need to be.
Teeth per inch — TPI, sometimes listed as points per inch — is the number that decides how a saw behaves. Fewer, bigger teeth cut fast and aggressively but leave a rough edge. More, smaller teeth cut slowly but leave a clean, splinter-free finish. It’s always a trade between speed and smoothness.

Rule of thumb: you want at least three teeth engaged in the material at all times. On thin metal or trim, that means a high TPI blade — too few teeth and the saw grabs, chatters, and bends.
A traditional handsaw (Western-style, cuts on the push stroke) is the do-everything choice for lumber and sheet goods. Brands like Stanley and Irwin make durable induction-hardened versions that hold an edge for years, though the teeth can’t be resharpened once dull — you replace the saw.
A Japanese pull saw cuts on the pull stroke, which keeps the thin blade in tension so it tracks straight and leaves a glass-smooth kerf. If you do any trim, furniture, or flush-cutting dowels, this is the upgrade people wish they’d bought sooner. Pair it with sharp planes and scrapers for finish work.
A back saw has a rigid spine along the top for dead-straight, controlled cuts — the classic partner for a miter box when you’re cutting trim to exact angles. For curves, a coping saw or a bow saw flexes the thin blade to follow a line. And for metal — cutting a bolt, threaded rod, or a length of pipe — a hacksaw with the right blade is the answer; keep spare high-TPI blades on hand.
Look past the sticker and check three things:
If you’re doing enough cutting that a hand saw feels slow, that’s the signal to look at corded and cordless power tools — but for occasional, precise, or quiet work, a good hand saw still wins on control and setup time.
A saw is only as good as your setup. Clamp your stock so it can’t shift — a pair of clamps and a stable workbench or sawhorses make cuts safer and straighter. Mark your line with a square from the squares and layout tools aisle, and keep marking tools handy so you’re cutting to a crisp line, not a guess. A cheap file touches up burrs on cut metal in seconds.
One 20-inch crosscut handsaw (8–10 TPI) covers lumber, plywood, and fence repairs. Add a hacksaw for the odd bolt or pipe and you’re set for 90% of household cuts.

For all-around home use, an 8 to 10 TPI crosscut handsaw is the sweet spot. It cuts framing lumber and plywood reasonably fast while still leaving a decent edge. Go lower (4 to 7 TPI) only if you mostly rip boards with the grain, and higher (12 plus) for trim and fine work.
A rip saw has fewer, chisel-like teeth designed to cut along the grain of the wood, like slicing a board narrower. A crosscut saw has more teeth filed at an angle to sever wood fibers cleanly across the grain, like cutting a board to length. Using the wrong one still works, just slower and rougher.
Use a hacksaw for metal such as bolts, threaded rod, and conduit, with an 18 to 32 TPI blade rated for the material. For PVC and plastic pipe a fine-tooth handsaw or hacksaw works well. Do not use a coarse wood saw on metal, as it will grab and dull almost immediately.
A Japanese pull saw cuts on the pull stroke, which keeps its thin blade under tension so it stays straight and tracks its line. The fine teeth and thin kerf remove less wood and leave a very smooth edge, which is why they are popular for trim, flush cuts, and joinery.
Most modern saws have induction-hardened teeth that stay sharp for years but cannot be resharpened, so you replace the saw when it dulls. Traditional filed-tooth saws can be sharpened with a saw file and setting tool. Keep any saw dry, wipe the blade with light oil to prevent rust, and store it so the teeth do not knock against other tools.
