Reach for the wrong screwdriver and you’ll strip the head, chew up the trim, or round off a screw so badly it has to be drilled out. Match the tip to the fastener and the same job takes ten seconds and leaves no marks. Knowing the handful of common tip types — and when each one earns its spot in the drawer — is one of the cheapest skills in the whole shop.
Buy a set that covers Phillips (#1 and #2), slotted (two sizes), and a #2 square/Robertson, then add Torx (T15/T20/T25) the first time a project demands it. Those tips handle the overwhelming majority of household and building screws. Choose a driver that fits the screw exactly, press hard, and turn slowly — most stripped heads come from a loose or undersized fit, not weak wrists.
Screw heads come in a manageable number of drive types, and each exists for a reason — better grip, higher torque, or resistance to tampering. Here’s what shows up in a normal home and what each one is really for.

Tip: “Pozidriv” (PZ) looks like Phillips but has extra angled lines between the arms. A Phillips driver will slip in it. If you see those little tick marks, you need a Pozidriv bit — common on European furniture and appliances.
Ninety percent of the screws you’ll drive are one of these three. Phillips is everywhere because it’s cheap and self-centering, but its sloped flanks are designed to “cam out” (pop up and out) under load — great for a factory line that doesn’t want over-tightened screws, annoying when you’re driving a long fastener by hand. That’s where square and Torx shine: their flat, deep recesses grip the driver and refuse to slip, so nearly all the modern deck and exterior screws your neighborhood hardware store stocks use one or the other. Torx in particular transfers the most torque with the least effort, which is why premium construction screws from brands like GRK and SPAX have standardized on it.
The practical takeaway: keep a #2 Phillips and a #2 square within reach for general work, and buy Torx drivers (or driver bits for your drill) the first time a box of screws calls for them. It always pays for itself — a T25 bit that costs a couple dollars saves a whole deck’s worth of stripped heads.
Tip type is only half the battle; tip size is what actually saves the screw. Phillips runs from #0 (small electronics) through #1, #2 (the household default), and up. Slotted is measured by blade width and thickness — a blade that’s too narrow twists in the slot and mangles it. A good driver should sit in the head snugly with no wobble and no gap at the bottom.
For phones, glasses, and laptops, step down to a dedicated precision screwdriver set — those tiny fasteners strip in an instant under a full-size driver.
Beyond the tip, a few build details separate a driver you’ll keep for twenty years from one that blisters your palm. A cushioned, oversized grip lets you put real torque down without a sore hand. A magnetic tip holds the screw so you can start it one-handed. And for anything past a few fasteners, a set of interchangeable bits in a drill or impact driver beats muscle every time.

Both are cross-shaped, but Pozidriv adds four small angled ribs between the main arms and a set of tick marks on the screw head. A Phillips driver will cam out and slip in a Pozidriv screw, and vice versa. If you see the tiny tick marks, use a Pozidriv bit. Pozidriv is common on European furniture and appliances.
Usually the driver is the wrong size or worn, or you are not pressing hard enough. Phillips heads are designed to cam out under load, so a loose or undersized tip pops out and rounds the head. Use the correct number size, press firmly into the screw, and turn slowly. A fresh, sharp bit grips far better than an old one.
Yes. Robertson is the brand name for the square-recess drive invented in Canada, and most people just call it a square drive today. A number 2 square bit fits the most common deck and cabinet screws. The deep square socket resists cam-out and holds the screw on the bit, which is why it is popular for one-handed work.
You do not need them until a project calls for them, which happens more often than people expect. Most premium deck and construction screws, plus many appliances, electronics, and cars, use Torx because it transfers the most torque with the least slip. Buying a T15, T20, and T25 bit the first time you meet a Torx screw is cheap insurance against stripped heads.
A number 2 Phillips is the single most-used size in a home, followed by a couple of slotted blade widths and a number 2 square. A multi-bit or ratcheting driver that stores those tips in the handle covers the vast majority of household jobs in one tool. Add a precision set for electronics and Torx bits for structural screws.
