How to Choose a Heat Gun

A heat gun looks like a hair dryer with an attitude problem — and that’s exactly the point. Pick the wrong one and you’ll scorch trim, warp siding, or stall out halfway through stripping a door. Get the temperature control right and the same tool strips paint, thaws pipes, bends PVC, and shrinks wire connectors without ever touching an open flame.

The short answer

For most homeowners, a corded heat gun with variable temperature control (roughly 120–1,100°F) in the 1,500–1,800-watt range is the sweet spot. Buy fixed dual-heat only for occasional light jobs; go cordless if you’re working up a ladder or away from an outlet; and reach for a true LCD-controlled professional gun only if you’re soldering, doing paintless dent repair, or working plastics where precise temperature matters.

What a heat gun actually does

A heat gun blows a stream of hot air — anywhere from a warm 120°F up to a blistering 1,300°F on pro models — over whatever you point it at. That’s enough to soften old paint so it lifts off with a scraper, loosen a rusted bolt, dry damp wood filler, shrink heat-shrink tubing over a splice, thaw a frozen pipe, or make rigid PVC pliable enough to bend. Because there’s no flame, it’s the safer choice near siding, window glazing, and finished surfaces where a torch would char or crack things.

The trade-off is that heat guns are indiscriminate: the air that softens paint will also blister your skin, ignite dust, and crack a window pane if you dwell too long. The features you pay for — temperature control, airflow settings, and the right nozzle — are really about aiming that heat precisely instead of blasting everything in front of you.

The features that actually matter

Ignore the marketing wattage wars for a second. Four things separate a gun you’ll love from one you’ll fight:

  • Temperature control. Single-heat is one blast setting — fine for shrink tubing, useless for delicate work. Dual-heat (a low and a high) covers most casual jobs. Variable dial or LCD lets you dial an exact temp, which is what you want for plastics, adhesives, and stripping without scorching.
  • Airflow settings. A separate fan-speed control matters more than people expect. Low airflow concentrates heat on a small spot (soldering, small parts); high airflow covers a wide area fast (stripping a big door). A gun with only one fan speed limits you.
  • Wattage & heat-up time. 1,500–1,800 watts is the practical range for a 120V outlet. More watts means faster recovery and higher top-end temps, not necessarily “better.”
  • Nozzle attachments. Concentrator, deflector (spoon), reflector, and reducer nozzles aim heat where you need it. A gun with none is a gun you’ll outgrow.

Tip: look for overload protection (a thermal cutoff) and a built-in stand or flat back so the gun can sit nozzle-up to cool safely without you holding it. That flat rest is the difference between a scorched workbench and a happy one.

For the vast majority of projects, a variable-temperature corded gun wins on price, power, and runtime. Go cordless only when the cord is genuinely in your way — and keep a charged battery on the shelf, because a heat gun drains a pack fast.

Match the gun to the job — and the safety gear

The single most common mistake is using too much heat. Stripping paint wants roughly 750–1,000°F with a wide deflector nozzle and a sharp scraper following right behind. Bending PVC or softening vinyl wants a gentler 300–500°F so it doesn’t bubble. Shrink tubing and electrical work want low heat and low airflow. Chemical paint and adhesive removers paired with a heat gun make quick work of stubborn finishes — but never use a heat gun on lead-based paint, which releases toxic fumes when heated.

Whatever the job, heat guns are burn-and-fire hazards. Keep a set of safety glasses and heat-resistant gloves on, lay down drop cloths to catch hot scrapings, and keep a fire extinguisher within reach when you’re near dry wood or dust.

What temperature do I need to strip paint with a heat gun?

Most paint softens and bubbles between 750 and 1,000 degrees Fahrenheit. Keep the gun moving, hold it a couple inches off the surface, and follow right behind with a scraper. Never use a heat gun on lead-based paint, because heating it releases toxic fumes.

Can I use a hair dryer instead of a heat gun?

No. A hair dryer tops out around 140 degrees Fahrenheit, which is far too cool to strip paint, bend plastic, or shrink tubing. A heat gun reaches 500 to 1,300 degrees. Using a hair dryer for heat-gun tasks just wastes time and risks overheating the dryer.

Is a corded or cordless heat gun better?
