How to Choose an Oscillating Multi-Tool

An oscillating multi-tool is the one power tool that finishes the jobs every other tool can’t reach — flush-cutting a door jamb, plunging a clean pocket into drywall, or grinding out old grout without wrecking the tile. The catch is that the tool is only half the purchase; the blade system and the corded-vs-cordless choice decide whether you love it or leave it in the drawer.

The short answer

For most people, a cordless 18V/20V oscillating multi-tool with tool-free (universal-fit) blade changes and variable speed is the right buy. Corded models make sense only for heavy daily use; the real money is in the blades, so budget for a starter blade assortment and buy the right blade for each material.

What an oscillating multi-tool actually does

Instead of spinning like a drill or a saw, the head vibrates side to side in a tiny arc — usually 3–4 degrees — thousands of times a minute. That fast, short motion lets a flat blade cut, sand, scrape, and grind in tight spots where a rotating tool would kick or gouge. It’s the go-to for undercutting door casings for new flooring, cutting out a damaged section of drywall, flush-trimming plumbing pipe, removing caulk and grout, and sanding into corners.

It is not a fast tool. If you need to rip a sheet of plywood, reach for a circular or table saw instead; if you’re demoing framing, a reciprocating saw is faster. Corded vs. cordless

This is the first real fork. Corded tools give you unlimited runtime and steady power for grinding grout or long sanding sessions, and they tend to cost less up front. Cordless tools win on convenience and reach — no cord to snag on a ladder or under a sink — and modern brushless models have closed most of the power gap. If you already own drills and drivers from DeWalt, Milwaukee, Makita, Ryobi, or Bosch, buying the bare tool on that same battery platform is almost always the smart move.

The blade mount is the spec that matters most

Today the standard to want is a universal / OIS (Open Interface System) mount — often marketed as “fits all major brands.” It accepts blades from nearly every maker, which keeps accessory and blade prices competitive and your options open. Pair that with a tool-free blade change (a lever that releases the blade with no hex key) and you’ll actually swap blades as often as the job needs, instead of powering through with the wrong one.
