How to Choose a Jigsaw

A jigsaw is the one saw that cuts curves, notches, and inside cutouts no other tool can touch — but a bargain model wanders off your line, rattles your fillings, and burns through blades. The right one tracks straight, stays comfortable for a long cut, and takes the blade you actually need.

The short answer

For most homeowners, a cordless 20V/18V jigsaw with orbital action, tool-less blade change, and a variable-speed trigger is the sweet spot. Buy into a battery platform you already own (DeWalt, Milwaukee, Ryobi, Makita) and spend your money on good T-shank blades rather than a bigger motor. Corded barrel-grip models still win for all-day precision work.

Corded or cordless — and which grip?

Cordless has become the default for a reason: no cord to snag on your workpiece, and a modern brushless motor on an 18V/20V pack easily rips through 2x lumber and plywood. If you already own drills or a circular saw from one battery line, staying in that family (Ryobi ONE+, DeWalt 20V MAX, Milwaukee M18, Makita LXT) is the cheapest smart move you’ll make. Corded jigsaws still make sense if you do long production runs, cut a lot of thick hardwood, or simply hate charging batteries — they never sag mid-cut.

Grip style matters more than most buyers realize. A top-handle (D-handle) jigsaw is intuitive and great for on-site cuts. A barrel-grip puts your hand lower and closer to the blade, which trims-carpenters and cabinetmakers prefer for tight curve control. If you’re outfitting a shop alongside other power tools, try both in your hand before deciding.

The features that actually change your cuts

Ignore the marketing and focus on these. Orbital action swings the blade forward on the up-stroke for faster, more aggressive cutting in wood — usually with 3–4 selectable settings (turn it off for metal and fine finish cuts). Variable speed via the trigger or a dial lets you slow down for plastic and metal so you don’t melt or overheat. Tool-less blade change is non-negotiable in 2026; you should never need an Allen key. A bevel-adjust shoe tilts up to 45° for angled cuts, and integrated dust blow or a vac port keeps your line visible.

Blades matter more than the saw

Match tooth count and material to the job, and always buy T-shank blades — they’re the universal standard and lock in tool-lessly. Power, comfort, and the numbers worth reading

Corded jigsaws are rated in amps (5–7A is plenty); cordless are rated by voltage and, more usefully, by whether the motor is brushless (more runtime, more torque, longer life). Stroke length (typically ~1 inch) and strokes-per-minute (up to ~3,000 SPM) tell you how fast it clears material. But specs only get you so far — vibration and balance decide whether you can hold a line for an hour. A heavy, well-damped saw actually cuts more accurately than a buzzy lightweight one. Cushioned grips and a low-vibration mechanism are worth paying for if you cut often.

Don’t forget the supporting cast: sharp cuts need the workpiece held still, so a couple of good clamps and a sturdy bench or sawhorses do as much for accuracy as the saw itself.

Yes, but it takes help. Clamp a straightedge as a guide fence, use a wider coarse blade, keep the shoe flat, and don’t force the feed. For long, dead-straight rips a circular saw or table saw is better — the jigsaw’s real strength is curves and cutouts.

What’s the difference between T-shank and U-shank blades?
