How to Choose a Stud Finder

A stud finder is a five-dollar problem you only notice after a fifty-pound TV pulls a fistful of drywall onto the floor. The right one turns “I think there’s a stud here” into a mark you’d bet a mounting bracket on — and keeps your drill bit clear of live wires.

The short answer

For everyday picture-hanging and shelf-mounting, a mid-range electronic stud finder that reads center-and-edge and warns you about live AC wiring is the sweet spot — think Franklin Sensors, Zircon, or Bosch in the $25–$50 range. Magnetic finders are cheap and foolproof but slow; deep-scanning multi-sensor models earn their keep only in plaster or double-drywall walls.

The three types, and who each one is for

Every stud finder is trying to answer one question — “where is the solid wood (or metal) behind this wall?” — but they get there in very different ways. Magnetic finders hunt for the screws and nails that hold drywall to the framing. Electronic (capacitive) finders sense the change in density where a stud sits behind the panel. Multi-sensor and radar-style models map a wider slice of wall at once for a clearer picture of thick or stubborn surfaces.

Tip: whatever you buy, confirm the hit before you drill. A finish nail pushed in at the mark, or a second scan from the opposite direction, costs ten seconds and saves a patch job.

The features that actually matter

Marketing sheets list a dozen “modes.” In practice, only a few change how the tool feels in your hand. Prioritize the ones below and ignore the rest.

  • Live AC wire detection. Non-negotiable. A finder that flashes when it passes over hot wiring keeps a drill bit out of a $200 electrician call. Pair it with a proper circuit and voltage tester before any cut near an outlet.
  • Center-finding vs. edge-finding. Edge finders beep at both sides of a stud and you split the difference; center-finders point straight at the middle. Center-finding is faster and more forgiving.
  • Deep-scan mode. Standard mode reads about ¾” deep; deep-scan doubles it for plaster or double-layer walls. Skip it if your home is standard single drywall.
  • Metal detection. Distinguishes copper pipe and rebar from wood — worth it in kitchens, baths, and masonry.
  • A clear display. A big backlit screen or a ring of LEDs beats a single squawking beep, especially over your head on a ladder.

Reading your wall before you shop

The wall decides the tool as much as the budget does. Standard ½” drywall over wood studs is the easy case — almost anything works. Plaster-and-lath in a pre-1950s house scatters a cheap electronic finder, so a magnetic model (hunting the lath nails) or a deep-scan sensor is the honest answer. Tile, brick, and concrete need a metal-capable or radar unit; a basic capacitive finder simply won’t read through them.

Metal studs, common in newer condos and commercial spaces, are actually easy — a magnetic finder snaps to them instantly. Know which wall you’re dealing with and you’ll never overspend or under-buy.

Do stud finders really work on plaster walls?

Basic electronic (capacitive) finders struggle on plaster-and-lath because the uneven density confuses them. Use a magnetic finder that locks onto the lath nails, or a deep-scan multi-sensor model rated for thicker walls. Always confirm with a test nail before drilling.

Are cheap magnetic stud finders any good?

Yes, for what they are. They find the screws and nails holding drywall to the studs, never need batteries, and never give a false electronic reading. The trade-off is speed — you have to sweep the wall to catch a fastener rather than seeing the whole stud at once.

Can a stud finder detect electrical wires?

Many electronic models include live AC wire detection that flashes or beeps when you pass over energized wiring. It is a warning aid, not a guarantee — treat every wall near outlets and switches as live and confirm with a dedicated voltage tester before you cut or drill.

How far apart are wall studs?

In most modern U.S. homes, studs sit 16 inches on center, though 24 inches is common in some newer or garage construction. Once you find one stud, measure 16 inches to locate the next and confirm it with your finder before marking.

Why does my stud finder keep giving false readings?

Usually low batteries, starting the scan already over a stud, or textured/wet walls. Replace the battery, start on a clearly hollow spot so the tool can calibrate, hold it flat, and move slowly. Deep-scan mode can also over-report on thin walls — drop back to standard mode.
