The right concrete anchor holds a TV mount, a handrail, or a water heater strap for decades — the wrong one pulls out of the wall the first time weight leans on it. The trick isn’t buying the biggest anchor; it’s matching the anchor type to your base material, your load, and how you drilled the hole.
For most solid-concrete jobs, a sleeve anchor or a wedge anchor is the reliable default — wedge for heavy structural loads, sleeve for medium-duty into concrete, brick, or block. For hollow block or drywall over masonry, use a toggle or a plastic/nylon expansion anchor. Match the drill-bit diameter to the anchor exactly, drill the hole slightly deeper than the anchor, and clean the dust out before you set it.
Every anchor decision starts with the base material, because “concrete” on a job site can mean four very different things. Poured solid concrete is dense and strong — it takes almost any masonry anchor. Concrete block (CMU) is hollow, so an expansion anchor that grabs a thin face shell can crack right through it. Brick and mortar are somewhere in between, and the joint between bricks holds very differently than the brick face. Poke a masonry nail or a bit into the spot and feel it: solid resistance the whole way is poured concrete; a sudden hollow give a half-inch in is block.
You’ll also need the right hole. A regular drill will burn out fast on concrete — you want a hammer drill or, for bigger anchors and repeated holes, a rotary hammer from the power tools aisle paired with a carbide masonry bit. Grab a set of masonry drill bits sized to the anchors you’re using; the anchor package always lists the exact bit diameter.
Anchors split into two families: expansion anchors that wedge tight against the sides of the hole, and screw anchors that cut their own threads into masonry. Here’s how the common ones stack up.

Tip: Concrete screws are the easiest anchor for a DIYer — you drill, then drive the screw with an impact driver, no expansion plug to fumble. They’re also removable, which makes them ideal when a fixture might move later.
Two measurements decide whether an anchor holds: diameter and embedment depth (how far it sits into the concrete). More of both means more holding power. As a rule of thumb, embed a wedge or sleeve anchor at least the length listed on the package — usually the anchor diameter times four or more — and stay a few inches away from any edge so the concrete doesn’t blow out.
Loads come in two directions, and anchors are rated separately for each: pull-out (tension) is force straight away from the wall, like a hanging swing; shear is force sliding along the wall, like a shelf bracket holding books. Manufacturers such as Simpson Strong-Tie, Hilti, Red Head, and Tapcon publish rating tables — use them, and then give yourself a safety margin of four to one for anything that matters. If you’re anchoring a handrail or anything life-safety, over-build.
Sometimes you can’t use an expansion anchor — the concrete is cracked, the load is enormous, or you’re anchoring near an edge where a wedge would split the slab. That’s where adhesive anchoring comes in: you drill the hole, clean it, inject a two-part epoxy from the adhesives section, and set a threaded rod or rebar into it. Cured epoxy grips the entire surface of the hole instead of pushing outward, so it works in cracked concrete and close to edges, and it delivers the highest loads of any anchor. The trade-off is cure time and a fussier install — it’s worth it for structural work but overkill for a coat hook.
Railings, ledger boards, machinery, or anything bearing serious load into solid poured concrete? Reach for wedge anchors — or epoxy with threaded rod if the concrete is cracked or you’re near an edge.
Mounting a TV bracket, furring strips, an electrical box, or a shelf into concrete or brick? Concrete screws (Tapcon-style) are fast, removable, and forgiving — drill, drive, done.
Anchoring into concrete block where the wall is hollow behind a thin face? Use a toggle bolt or sleeve anchor rated for block — never a wedge, which will crack the face shell.

A wedge anchor is a threaded rod with a small clip at the bottom that flares out and bites into solid concrete when you tighten the nut — it’s the strongest common anchor but only works in solid concrete and is permanent. A sleeve anchor has a full metal sleeve that expands along its length, so it spreads force over a wider area and works in weaker materials like brick and block, at a medium load rating.

Use exactly the bit diameter printed on the anchor package — it’s matched to the anchor, not to the bolt size. An oversize hole destroys holding power because the anchor can’t grip the sides. You’ll need a carbide-tipped masonry bit and a hammer drill or rotary hammer; a standard twist bit will not cut concrete.
Don’t use a wedge anchor — it will crack the thin face shell. Instead use a toggle bolt, a sleeve anchor rated for block, or an anchor specifically designed for hollow masonry, which spreads the load behind the face. For heavy loads into block, epoxy anchoring with a screen tube is the most reliable method.
They do, but material matters. Standard zinc-plated anchors will rust outdoors or in damp locations. For any exterior or wet install — deck ledgers, railings, pool areas — buy stainless steel or hot-dip galvanized anchors so corrosion doesn’t weaken the connection over time.
