How to Choose a Sump Pump

A sump pump is the cheapest insurance you’ll ever buy against a flooded basement — right up until the moment it fails and you’re bailing water at 2 a.m. The right pump, correctly sized with a backup plan, is the difference between a dry floor and a five-figure restoration bill. Here’s how to choose one that actually holds the line.

The short answer

For most homes, buy a 1/3 to 1/2 HP submersible sump pump with a cast-iron body and a vertical or tethered float switch, sized to your pit and your water table. If a power outage during a storm would flood your basement — and it usually would — add a battery backup pump as a second line of defense. Match the pump to how much water you actually get, not to the biggest number on the shelf.

Submersible vs. pedestal: which type fits your pit?

Sump pumps come in two basic shapes. A submersible pump sits down inside the pit, fully sealed against water, with the motor cooled by the surrounding liquid. It’s quieter, handles more water, tolerates small debris, and disappears under the lid — the right choice for finished basements and any pit that fills fast. A pedestal pump keeps its motor up on a shaft above the pit, with only the intake down in the water. Pedestals are cheaper, easier to service, and last a long time because the motor stays dry, but they’re louder and move less water. They suit narrow pits and light, occasional seepage.

For the overwhelming majority of homeowners fighting a real water problem, a submersible sump pump is the answer. Reserve pedestals for tight pits or budget builds where the basement is unfinished.

Sizing: horsepower, head, and how much water you get

Bigger is not better — an oversized pump short-cycles, wearing itself out and hammering your check valve. What matters is matching flow (gallons per hour) to how fast your pit fills, at the head height your pump has to lift and push the water. Head is the vertical rise from the pump up to the discharge, plus friction from the horizontal run. Every pump’s real output drops as head increases, so read the flow chart on the box, not just the headline GPH.

Rule of thumb: during heavy rain, time how fast your empty pit refills. If it fills in under a minute, size up. If it barely moves, don’t overbuy.

The parts that decide whether it lasts

  • Body material: Cast iron dissipates heat better and outlasts thermoplastic, especially on pumps that run often. Plastic is fine for light duty; cast iron (or cast iron with an epoxy coat) is the durable pick.
  • Float switch: The most common failure point. A vertical float is compact and reliable in tight pits; a tethered float suits wider pits and cycles less often. Avoid flimsy pressure switches on cheap units.
  • Check valve: Stops pumped water from draining back into the pit and re-triggering the pump. A quality check valve is a small part that saves a lot of cycling — replace it if it chatters.
  • Discharge pipe: Most sump discharge is 1-1/2” PVC. Keep the run short and pitched, and make sure it daylights well away from the foundation. Stock up on the right PVC pipe and fittings before you start.
  • Solids handling: If your pit collects grit, choose a pump rated to pass small solids so the impeller doesn’t clog.

Backup power: the part people skip and regret

Here’s the cruel math: the storms that dump the most water are the same storms that knock out the power. A primary pump on a dead circuit is a paperweight. You have three ways to cover that gap. A battery backup pump mounts alongside your primary and kicks in automatically when the power drops or the main pump fails — buy a deep-cycle marine battery to feed it. A water-powered backup uses municipal water pressure and never needs charging, but wastes water and won’t work on a well. Or you back the whole house with a standby or portable generator — the most robust option if outages are long in your area.
