How to Choose a Surge Protector

One nearby lightning strike, one utility switching event, or one motor kicking on down the block can push a spike of hundreds of volts into your outlets in microseconds. A real surge protector clamps that spike before it reaches your TV, PC, or router — a cheap “power strip” just splits one outlet into six and does nothing to protect anything.

The short answer

For most homes, buy a surge protector rated 2,000–3,000 joules with a UL 1449 listing, a clamping voltage of 400V or lower, and a “protected” indicator light. Skip anything that just says “power strip” with no joule rating — that’s an extension cord in disguise. Match the joule rating to what you’re protecting: more electronics and higher value means more joules.

Surge protector vs. power strip — know the difference

They look identical on the shelf, and that’s exactly the problem. A plain power strip is a convenience device: it turns one wall outlet into several and often adds an on/off switch. It offers zero surge suppression. A true surge protector contains metal-oxide varistors (MOVs) that divert excess voltage to ground the instant a spike arrives.

The tell is on the box and the label: a genuine surge protector lists a joule rating and a UL 1449 listing. If neither number appears, you’re holding a power strip. When you’re shopping the broader electrical aisle, that single spec is what separates the two categories.

The specs that actually matter

Four numbers decide whether a surge protector is worth buying. Everything else — USB ports, cord length, number of outlets — is convenience.

Tip: Joules are consumed over time. A protector that has absorbed years of small spikes may be worn out even though it still passes power. Buy one with a “protected” status light and replace it when the light goes out.

Match the joules to what you’re plugging in

Think in tiers. A lamp and a phone charger don’t need much. A gaming PC, a 65-inch OLED, or a home office full of gear deserves the top tier — the replacement cost of the electronics dwarfs the price difference.

  • Under 1,000 J: lamps, fans, small kitchen counter items — light-duty only.
  • 1,000–2,000 J: printers, routers, a single TV, general household electronics.
  • 2,000–3,000 J: desktop PCs, game consoles, sound systems, most home offices.

  • Connected-equipment warranty: better brands like Belkin, Tripp Lite, and APC back their units with a dollar warranty on attached gear. Read the terms, but it signals confidence.
  • Coax / Ethernet / phone-line jacks: essential for home theater and any setup where a surge could travel in over the cable or data line.
  • Widely-spaced or rotating outlets: fit bulky wall-wart transformers without blocking neighbors.
  • Cord length: a longer cord beats daisy-chaining a second strip, which is a fire risk. If you need distance, use one long extension cord set rated for the load, not two strips in series.

Skip: gimmicky “audiophile” power conditioning claims on consumer units, and any unit without a joule rating no matter how many USB ports it advertises.

Point-of-use vs. whole-house protection
