A router is the tool that turns a flat board into finished work — rounded edges, dadoes, dovetails, inlays, clean flush trims. Buy the wrong one and it either bogs down in big cuts or feels like overkill for a picture frame. Get the size and base system right and it becomes the most-used tool on your bench.
For most woodworkers, a 2.25 HP variable-speed combo kit with both a fixed and a plunge base is the smartest single purchase — it edge-profiles in the router table, plunges for mortises and inlays, and handles all but the biggest raised-panel bits. Add a small compact/trim router later for one-handed edge work, and buy a bit set matched to the collet size (1/2″ shank whenever the bit offers it).
Router power is quoted in horsepower, and it maps directly to what the tool can do. A compact (trim) router runs around 1 to 1.25 HP with a 1/4″ collet — light, one-handed, perfect for roundovers, flush-trimming laminate and edge banding, small chamfers, and sign work. A mid-size 2 to 2.25 HP router is the do-everything class: it accepts a 1/2″ collet, has the muscle for most edge and joinery bits, and is the standard size for a router table. A full-size 3 to 3.5 HP router is for one job in particular — big raised-panel bits and heavy production work — and it’s almost always table-mounted because it’s too heavy to push freehand comfortably.
DeWalt, Bosch, Makita, and Milwaukee all build well-regarded routers across these classes, and each is available through authorized retailer channels rather than gray-market imports. If you only buy one, buy the mid-size combo kit and grow from there.

The base is how the router rides on the wood, and it matters as much as the motor. A fixed base holds the bit at a set depth — simple, stable, low center of gravity, and the natural choice for edge work and router-table mounting. A plunge base lets you lower a spinning bit straight down into the middle of a board, then retract it, which is what you need for mortises, stopped dadoes, inlays, and template work.
Here’s the good news: most 2.25 HP kits ship as a combo — one motor pack that drops into either base. That’s the best value in the category. You get plunge capability when you need it and the simplicity of a fixed base the rest of the time, for less than buying two separate routers.
Tip: whichever base you use freehand, always feed the router against the bit’s rotation (left to right on the near edge of a workpiece). Feeding the wrong way causes the router to self-feed and skate — the number-one rookie scare.

A router is only as good as the bit in it. Start with a modest set of carbide-tipped router bits — a couple of roundovers, a 45-degree chamfer, a flush-trim with a bearing, a straight bit or two, and a rabbeting bit will cover the vast majority of home projects. Buy carbide, not high-speed steel; it stays sharp far longer in hardwood and man-made sheet goods.
Beyond bits, a few supporting tools turn a router from frustrating to fun: solid clamps to lock down your work and jigs, a sturdy workbench to rout on, and a good edge to reference against. After the router leaves the wood, you’ll finish up with sanding abrasives to knock down any fuzz and stain or finish to seal the new profile. Because bits throw chips and shavings, don’t skip eye and hearing protection — a router is one of the loudest, highest-RPM tools you’ll own.
Corded is still the default for routers, and for good reason: sustained high-RPM cutting draws a lot of power, and a cord never dies mid-pass. But cordless trim routers from DeWalt, Makita, Milwaukee, and Ryobi have become genuinely good for edge work, roundovers, and jobsite trim — the freedom of no cord snagging on a workpiece is real. If you already own a battery platform and want a compact router for light duty, cordless makes sense. For a router table or heavy joinery, stay corded.
Rounding over shelf edges, trimming edge banding, small signs? A cordless or corded compact trim router plus three or four common bits is all you need — light, cheap, and instantly useful.
Building furniture, boxes, and cabinets? Get the 2.25 HP variable-speed combo kit (fixed + plunge). It does edge profiles, dadoes, dovetail jigs, and mounts in a router table. The one to own.

Choose 1/2-inch shanks whenever a bit offers both. The thicker shank flexes less, leaves a cleaner cut, and lasts longer. Compact and trim routers only accept 1/4-inch shanks, so match your bit purchases to the collet your router actually has.
For a compact trim router doing roundovers, flush trimming, and light edge work, cordless models from DeWalt, Makita, Milwaukee, and Ryobi are genuinely good. For a router table or heavy joinery, stick with corded, since sustained high-RPM cutting draws steady power a battery can’t match for long.
Feed the router against the bit’s rotation. On the near edge of a workpiece, that means moving left to right. Feeding the wrong way lets the router self-feed and skate across the wood, which is unsafe and ruins the cut. When routing the inside of a frame, the direction reverses.
