A $10 bottle can quiet a rough idle, rescue gas that sat all winter, or do absolutely nothing but lighten your wallet. The trick isn’t buying the loudest label on the shelf—it’s matching the additive to the problem you actually have.
For routine upkeep, run a concentrated PEA (polyetheramine) fuel-system cleaner like Chevron Techron or Red Line SI-1 every few thousand miles. Add a stabilizer (STA-BIL) to any fuel that will sit longer than 30 days, and keep Sea Foam or HEET (dry-gas) on the shelf for rough running and water in the tank. Skip anything that promises horsepower or better mileage—that’s marketing, not chemistry.
“Fuel additive” is a catch-all for a shelf of products that do very different things. Buy the wrong category and you’ll be disappointed no matter how good the brand is. Most bottles fall into one of five jobs, and the auto maintenance chemicals aisle is organized around exactly these problems.

Tip: If you only ever buy one bottle, make it a PEA-based fuel-system cleaner. It’s the single additive with the most real-world evidence behind it—PEA is the same detergent chemistry the EPA-mandated “Top Tier” gasolines already use.
Two ingredients do almost all the honest work in this category. PEA (polyetheramine) is the strong detergent that scrubs carbon off injectors and intake valves—look for it on any bottle sold as a “fuel-system cleaner.” PIB or PIBA is a gentler detergent fine for routine maintenance but weaker on baked-on deposits. Cheap “gas treatments” are often mostly mineral spirits or naphtha—a solvent that does little an already-detergent gasoline doesn’t.
Be skeptical of anything promising more power or better fuel economy. A dirty engine restored to clean can regain lost mileage, but no additive lifts a healthy engine above its factory numbers. If a label leads with dyno charts instead of the active ingredient, put it back. When your rough running is really old or contaminated fuel, sometimes the honest fix is draining it into an approved can from the fuel containers and funnels aisle and starting fresh.
Gasoline and diesel additives are not interchangeable. Gas engines care about detergency and, occasionally, octane. Diesels care about cetane, lubricity, and cold-weather gelling—modern ultra-low-sulfur diesel is drier and harder on injection pumps, so a lubricity additive like Power Service or Howes earns its place, especially in older trucks.
Winter is where diesel owners can’t skip treatment: untreated diesel gels and clogs filters below about 15°F. An anti-gel additive lowers that point dramatically. Gas drivers in the cold have a simpler enemy—condensation—handled by a dry-gas water remover. Keep your winter automotive supplies stocked before the first freeze, not during it.
The place fuel additives matter most isn’t your car—it’s the mower, generator, chainsaw, and snowblower that sit for months. Pump gas is up to 10% ethanol, which attracts water and turns to gum and varnish in weeks, clogging the tiny carburetors on small engines. That’s the number-one reason a mower won’t start in spring.
A fuel stabilizer added before storage keeps gas usable for up to a year or two. For anything you store, an ethanol-shielding formula (Star Tron, or STA-BIL 360) is worth the extra dollar. Better yet for two-stroke and occasional-use gear: ethanol-free canned fuel, which never goes stale. Whichever route you take, store it in a proper sealed can from the fuel storage shelf, and keep the engine’s fuel and air filters fresh so a clean tank isn’t undone downstream.
Dosing matters. Most fuel-system cleaners are sized for a full tank—pour it in before you fill so it mixes, and then drive the tank down normally so the concentrated dose circulates. Doubling up doesn’t clean twice as fast; it just wastes product. For stabilizer, add it to fresh fuel and run the engine a few minutes so treated gas reaches the carburetor before storage.
If a car is running rough, clean fuel is only half the picture—a fouled plug or clogged filter won’t be fixed by a bottle. Pair a cleaner with fresh filters and, if you’re chasing a misfire, a quick check with a code reader or gauge from the test, tune and gauge aisle.
