The right motor oil is already printed in your owner’s manual — the trick is knowing what the numbers mean so you can buy with confidence instead of grabbing whatever’s on the endcap. Get the viscosity and the spec right and your engine runs cleaner, cooler, and longer; get them wrong and you invite sludge, wear, and a voided warranty.
Match the viscosity grade and the manufacturer spec listed in your owner’s manual — a grade like 5W-30 plus a standard like API SP or the automaker’s dexos, Ford WSS, or VW/BMW approval. For most cars built after 2010, a quality full synthetic in the specified grade is the smart default, and always change the oil filter with it.
Before you compare a single bottle, open the glovebox. Your owner’s manual (or the cap on the engine itself) lists exactly one thing that isn’t negotiable: the viscosity grade and the performance specification the engine was engineered around. Everything else — brand, price, synthetic versus conventional — is a preference layered on top of that requirement. Buying “a good oil” in the wrong grade is still the wrong oil.
You’ll usually see two things: a grade like 0W-20, 5W-30, or 10W-40, and a spec such as API SP, ILSAC GF-6, GM dexos1 Gen 3, Ford WSS-M2C, or a European approval like VW 502.00 or BMW LL-01. Modern motor oils from Mobil 1, Valvoline, Castrol, Pennzoil, and Royal Purple print these approvals right on the front label, so matching them takes about ten seconds once you know what you’re looking for.
Viscosity is just the oil’s resistance to flow — how thick or thin it is. A grade like 5W-30 is a multi-grade oil that behaves two ways. The number before the “W” (winter) is cold-flow: lower means it pumps faster on a freezing morning, protecting the engine in those first critical seconds. The number after is how thick it stays at full operating temperature. So 0W-20 flows easily cold and runs thin hot; 10W-40 is stiffer cold and thicker hot.

Tip: Never go up or down a grade to “protect” an engine unless the manufacturer approves it. Too thick and cold-start wear rises; too thin and hot-running protection drops. The engineered grade is the safe grade.
This is where most of the price difference lives, and it’s mostly a question of how the base oil is made and how long it lasts between changes.
If your manual calls for synthetic, don’t downgrade to save a few dollars — the change interval and warranty assume it. If it calls for conventional, upgrading to synthetic won’t hurt and may extend the interval, but check the manual before stretching miles.
An oil change is only as good as the oil filter you pair with it — a fresh filter from Fram, Wix, K&N, or Bosch keeps abrasive grit out of the oil you just paid for. While you’re under the hood, it’s the natural moment to top off other fluids and additives and check that your transmission fluid is clean. Power-equipment owners should note that mowers, generators, and pressure washers take their own small-engine oil and filters — usually a straight SAE 30 or 10W-30, not car oil.
Buy the drain plug crush washer, a proper funnel, and something to catch the mess. A pan of oil-absorbent on the garage floor turns an inevitable spill into a two-minute cleanup instead of a stain, and a few funnels and fluid containers make the job clean and spill-free.
Most four-cylinder engines hold 4–5 quarts; V6 and V8 engines run 5–7. Buy a 5-quart jug plus a spare quart for top-offs rather than five individual bottles — it’s cheaper per quart and you’ll want the extra on hand. Always fill to the manual’s capacity, then verify on the dipstick after the engine has sat; overfilling is as harmful as running low.
Post-2010 car or SUV? Run the exact full-synthetic grade and spec in your manual — usually 0W-20 or 5W-30 meeting API SP and your automaker’s approval. Change every 7,500–10,000 miles.
Past 75k miles or seeing a little smoke or seepage? A high-mileage full synthetic in your grade adds seal conditioners that swell gaskets and curb oil burn without changing the viscosity.
Hauling, towing, or running a diesel? Stick to the heavier grade the manual specifies (often 5W-40 or 15W-40) and a diesel-rated spec like API CK-4. Shorten intervals under hard use.

Oil that is too thin for your engine may not maintain a protective film at high temperature, raising wear; oil that is too thick pumps slowly on cold starts and can starve components for those first critical seconds.
