How to Choose a Level (and Use It Right)

A level is the tool that decides whether a shelf sags, a door binds, or a picture hangs crooked forever. It looks simple — a vial and a bubble — but the wrong length or a beat-up frame will steer you wrong every time you trust it. Here’s how to pick a level you can actually rely on, and how to read it right.

Length: match the level to the job

The single biggest mistake people make is buying one level and using it for everything. A level only reads true across the surface it actually touches — a short level bridges high spots and misses the overall slope, while a level that’s too long won’t fit where you need it. Tip: to check level across a span longer than your level, rest it on a straight board and flip the board end-for-end. If the bubble reads the same both ways, your surface is true; if it swings, the difference is real slope — not a bad level.

Frame and vials: what separates a good level from a throwaway

A level is only as honest as its frame. Aluminum box-beam levels — a hollow rectangular extrusion — stay straight and shrug off drops, which is why they dominate the jobsite. I-beam levels are lighter and cheaper but flex more; cast or machined levels are heavier and prized for masonry. Wood levels are handsome and stable but need care. For a first good level, box-beam aluminum is the safe answer.

Then there are the vials — the little liquid-filled tubes with the bubble. Look for at least three: one for level (horizontal), one for plumb (vertical), and often a 45-degree. The best vials are milled into a solid block and set permanently; cheaper ones are snap-in and can drift out of calibration. Do you need a digital or laser level?

A traditional bubble level is right for the vast majority of home projects, and it never needs a battery. But two other types earn their place. A digital level (often built into an aluminum frame, like Empire’s or Klein’s) reads out the exact angle in degrees or percent slope and beeps when you hit level — genuinely useful for setting a deliberate pitch, like a drain line or a wheelchair ramp. A laser level projects a dead-straight line across a whole room, which beats penciling marks when you’re hanging a row of cabinets, tiling a wall, or leveling pictures down a hallway.

How to read and use a level correctly

Owning a good level doesn’t help if you read it wrong. Two rules cover most of it. First, the bubble sits between the two lines when the surface is true — and it drifts toward the high end, so you lower whatever side the bubble leans to. Second, always check both directions: a shelf can be level side-to-side but still tilt front-to-back, dumping everything off the front edge.

  • Clean the surface first. A single crumb of drywall mud or sawdust under the level throws the reading off.
  • Read at eye level, straight on. Looking down at an angle makes the bubble appear off-center when it isn’t — this is called parallax.
  • Flip it to confirm. Set the level, note the bubble, then rotate it end-for-end in place. A true level reads identically both ways.
  • Mark your line, then measure. Pair the level with a tape measure and a sharp pencil so your level line becomes a usable mark.
  • For long runs, snap a line. A chalk line or laser beats sliding a short level down a wall.

Test your level before you trust it: set it on a flat surface and note the bubble, then spin it 180 degrees in the same spot. If the bubble lands in a different place, the level is out of calibration — retire it or, if the vials adjust, recalibrate. Do this to any level you’ve dropped.

Level, plumb, square — and their old-school cousins

“Level” means perfectly horizontal; “plumb” means perfectly vertical; “square” means two surfaces meeting at a true 90 degrees. A level checks the first two, but not the third — that’s a job for a framing or combination square. Hanging a door or building a cabinet, you’ll want both tools within reach. And for tall vertical checks where a level won’t reach, a classic plumb bob on a string still finds dead-true vertical using nothing but gravity.
