The wrong wall anchor is why that shelf is now on the floor and there’s a chunk of drywall missing behind it. Anchors are cheap, but the thing they hold up usually isn’t — and picking the right one comes down to two questions most people never ask. Here’s how to get it right the first time.
Match the anchor to your wall type and to the weight you’re hanging. For light items in drywall, a plastic expansion anchor or self-drilling threaded anchor is plenty. For anything heavy — a floating shelf, a TV mount, a cabinet, a grab bar — use a toggle bolt or a heavy-duty molly. And whenever a stud lands where you need it, skip the anchor entirely and drive a screw straight into the wood. A stud beats every anchor made.
An anchor exists for one reason — there’s no solid wood where you need to hang something. So before you reach for the anchor bin, run a stud finder across the wall. Studs are usually 16 inches apart (sometimes 24), and a screw driven into one will hold far more than any hollow-wall anchor. If your item lands on or near a stud, drive a proper wood or drywall screw into it and move on.
You only need an anchor when the mounting spot falls in open drywall, plaster, tile, brick, or concrete block. Once you know that, the choice is driven by two things: what the wall is made of, and how much weight will pull on it — including the sideways “shear” load of a shelf plus the outward “pull-out” load of someone leaning on it.
The same anchor behaves completely differently depending on what’s behind the paint. Drywall is hollow and crumbly. Plaster is hard but brittle. Masonry is solid and needs a masonry bit. Getting this wrong is the number-one reason anchors fail.
Tip: not sure what’s behind the paint? Push a pin in. If it goes in easily and hits a hollow, you have drywall. Firm resistance the whole way means plaster or masonry.
There are a dozen anchor styles, but they sort into a handful of families. Here’s the honest breakdown of when to use each — and remember every printed weight rating assumes a clean hole in good drywall, so cut it in half for anything that matters.

*Real-world working loads, not the optimistic package number. Plastic anchors are for light duty only — if you’re hanging something you’d be upset to lose, step up to a metal toggle. The toggle and molly aisle is where most people should be shopping for real weight, and a snap-toggle style is the closest a hollow wall gets to a stud.
“It’s only a small shelf” is how shelves end up on the floor. A 5-pound shelf holding 30 pounds of books is a 35-pound problem — and the load isn’t static. A coat hook gets yanked. A grab bar gets a person’s full weight. A floating shelf multiplies force at the wall because of leverage. Always rate for the worst-case pull, then add a generous margin.
Use more than one anchor whenever you can, and spread them across a wider bracket — two anchors 16 inches apart share the load far better than two crammed close together. For a floating shelf, a heavy mirror, or a bracket set, that means proper shelf brackets anchored at multiple points. For a grab bar or anything safety-critical, don’t improvise: hit a stud or use a rated masonry anchor, full stop.
A great anchor installed wrong holds like a bad one. Most failures trace back to the hole, not the hardware.
Tip: pulling an old anchor leaves a hole too big for a new one. Fill it with spackle or a wall-repair patch, let it cure, and re-drill fresh a half-inch to the side. A patched hole never anchors reliably.
Picture frames, a small clock, a coat hook — a ribbed plastic expansion anchor or a self-drilling threaded anchor in drywall is all you need. Keep a mixed jar on hand for the constant small jobs.
TV mount, floating shelf, upper cabinet, heavy mirror — find a stud if you can, and where you can’t, use metal toggle bolts or snap toggles rated well above the load. Never trust plastic here.

A metal toggle bolt or a strap/snap toggle is the strongest choice for hollow drywall, holding anywhere from about 50 pounds up to 100 pounds or more when installed correctly. They work by spreading the load across a wide bar behind the panel instead of just gripping the drywall face. For anything truly heavy, though, hitting a wood stud will always beat any anchor.
A ribbed plastic expansion anchor safely holds roughly 10 to 20 pounds in good drywall, and self-drilling threaded plastic or zinc anchors can reach 25 to 50 pounds. Treat the number printed on the package as a best case and cut it in half for real use. Anything heavier calls for a metal toggle or a stud.
No. If your screw goes into a wood stud, you do not need an anchor at all — the stud holds far more than any hollow-wall anchor. Use a stud finder to locate framing first, and reserve anchors for the spots where no stud lands where you need to mount.
Use a masonry anchor such as a sleeve anchor, a wedge anchor, or a plastic masonry plug, installed with a hammer drill and a carbide masonry bit. Drill the hole to the exact diameter and depth the anchor specifies. Standard drywall anchors will not hold in brick, block, or concrete.
The most common causes are overloading the anchor, drilling the hole too large so the anchor spins, or reusing a blown-out hole. Overtightening also strips the soft drywall behind a plastic anchor. Fix it by patching the old hole, letting it cure, and re-drilling fresh with the correct bit size and a properly rated anchor for the weight.
