Grab the wrong box of screws and you’ll find out the hard way — snapped heads in a deck board, stripped drywall that spins forever, or rust streaks bleeding down your fence in a single season. The screw aisle looks interchangeable. It absolutely is not.
Use wood screws for indoor framing and furniture, drywall screws only for hanging drywall, and coated or stainless deck screws for anything outdoors. The three differ in thread design, head shape, steel, and corrosion coating — and swapping one for another is how projects fail. When in doubt outside, buy the deck screw.
A screw has to do three jobs at once: bite into the material, pull two pieces tight, and survive its environment. Manufacturers tune four things to hit those jobs — thread pattern, head style, steel hardness, and coating. Get the combination wrong and the screw either won’t hold, snaps under load, or corrodes.
Drywall screws are the classic trap. They’re cheap, they’re everywhere in the small-screw bins, and people reach for them for everything. But they’re made of thin, brittle, hardened steel designed to seat flush in gypsum and nothing more. Put one under real structural load or outdoors and it will fail you.
Wood screws are built to clamp two pieces of wood together and stay put. Look for a coarse thread that stops short of a smooth shank under the head — that unthreaded section lets the top board pull down tight instead of hanging up on the threads. Most modern wood and construction screws take a star (Torx) or square (Robertson) drive, which grips far better than Phillips and won’t cam out and strip.
For cabinets, shelving, furniture, and interior framing, this is your screw. Brands like GRK, SPAX, and Power Pro have made self-drilling wood screws that need no pilot hole in most softwoods. Keep a range of construction screws on hand in #8 and #10 gauge, and pair them with a good driver bit so you’re not chewing up heads. A basic drill bit set for pilot holes rounds out the kit for hardwoods that split easily.
Drywall screws have a fine or coarse thread, a bugle-shaped head that dimples the paper without tearing it, and a sharp point that self-starts in gypsum. Coarse thread is for wood studs; fine thread is for metal studs. That’s the whole story — and it’s the only story they should be used for.
Tip: The hardened steel that makes drywall screws snap flush also makes them brittle. Never use them to hang a cabinet, build a jig, or fasten framing. Under shear load they shear — the head pops right off.
Deck screws are the ones people underestimate most. Outdoors, the enemy isn’t load — it’s corrosion, and pressure-treated lumber is especially aggressive. Modern PT wood uses copper-based preservatives that eat unprotected steel. That’s why exterior screws come either with a heavy polymer or ceramic coating or in solid stainless steel.
Deck screws also have a corrosion-matched finish, a Type-17 self-drilling tip that reduces splitting, and often a lower profile head for a clean deck surface. For most decks and fences, a quality coated screw is fine. Near saltwater or coastal air, step up to 316 stainless. Stock the right box from the decking and roofing fastener selection and match it to your treated or preserved lumber — a mismatched screw will telegraph rust stains within a year.

Three numbers matter. Gauge is the shank diameter — #6 to #14, higher is thicker. #8 handles most household work; #10 for heavier framing. Length should send the screw at least twice the thickness of your top board into the material below. And coating tells you where it can live.
Structural connections — joist hangers, ledger boards, framing plates — are a category of their own. Don’t improvise those with deck screws; use the rated structural specialty fasteners and, for anything hanging on drywall or masonry with no stud behind it, the correct wall anchor instead of forcing a screw to hold on its own.
Coarse-thread #6 drywall screws, 1-1/4″ for half-inch board on wood studs. Fine thread if your studs are metal. Nothing fancier needed.
#8 or #10 coated deck screws, 2-1/2″ to 3″, with a Type-17 tip. Go 316 stainless if you’re near salt air. Never drywall screws.
