Nail Types and Sizes, Explained

Grab the wrong nail and your project tells on you fast — splitting trim, popping loose in a year, or bleeding rust stains down a fresh fence. Nails look interchangeable in the bin, but length, gauge, head, and coating each do a specific job. Get those four right and a box of nails costs a few dollars and outlasts the house.

The short answer

For most framing use 16d (3½") common nails; for trim and molding use 6d–8d finish nails; and anything touching weather or pressure-treated wood needs hot-dipped galvanized or stainless steel. Match the length so it drives roughly two-thirds into the base material, pick a head that suits the look (big flat head to hold, small brad head to hide), and let the coating match the environment. That covers the overwhelming majority of home jobs.

The “penny” system, decoded

Nail length is sold by a centuries-old unit called the penny, written with a lowercase “d” (from the Latin denarius). It once described the price per hundred nails; today it’s simply a length code. The higher the number, the longer the nail. It’s worth memorizing the common jumps because packaging, framing plans, and the folks at the counter all speak in pennies.

Tip: the rule of thumb for holding power is that the nail should be about three times the thickness of the board you’re fastening down — so a ¾" board wants roughly a 2¼" nail. Too short and it won’t hold; too long and it splits the wood or blows out the back.

Nail types by head and shank

Once length is settled, the head and shank decide how the nail behaves. A big flat head grips like a washer and never pulls through; a tiny head disappears under a dab of putty. The shank — smooth, ringed, or spiraled — controls how hard the nail is to pull back out. Here are the ones you’ll actually reach for, most of which live in the packaged nail aisle and, for bigger jobs, in bulk boxes.

Gauge matters as much as head. A lower gauge number means a thicker nail: 15- and 16-gauge finish nails hold heavy casing, while 18-gauge brads and even skinnier 23-gauge pins are for delicate brads and tacks where splitting is the enemy. Material and coating: where nails live or die

The single most common nail failure isn’t the wrong length — it’s rust. Bright (uncoated) steel nails are fine buried in dry interior framing, but put them outdoors, near a bathroom, or into pressure-treated lumber and they corrode fast. Worse, the copper-based chemicals in modern treated wood eat ordinary galvanizing, so a deck built with the wrong nails can loosen and streak within a couple of seasons.

  • Bright / uncoated — cheapest; interior, dry, non-structural framing only.
  • Electro-galvanized — a thin zinc flash; okay for indoor trim, not for real weather.
  • Hot-dipped galvanized (HDG) — thick, rough zinc coat; the outdoor default and required for pressure-treated wood.
  • Stainless steel — costliest; the only real choice for cedar, redwood, and coastal or high-moisture work where even galvanizing stains.
  • Aluminum — for aluminum trim, screening, and some gutters; won’t rust but is soft.

For decks, fences, and siding, look for HDG or stainless decking and roofing fasteners rated for treated lumber — the box will say so. Cedar and redwood specifically want stainless: galvanized nails react with the wood’s natural tannins and leave black stains that no finish will hide. Brands like Grip-Rite, Maze, and Simpson Strong-Tie all label their nails by coating and rating, so read the box before the bin.

Nail or screw — and the tools to drive them

Nails flex and shear better under sudden loads, which is why framing and structural connections still lean on them; screws hold tighter against pull-out and back out cleanly, which is why decking and cabinetry often prefer them. Whichever you choose, the driving tool matters. A good claw hammer and a nail set (for sinking finish nails below the surface) handle small jobs; for trim, decking, or a whole room of baseboard, a pneumatic or cordless nailer pays for itself in an afternoon. Keep a few boxes of specialty fasteners on hand too — masonry nails, hardened concrete nails, and joist-hanger nails each solve a problem a common nail can’t.

What does the “d” in nail sizes mean?

What nails should I use for pressure-treated wood?

What size nail do I need for framing?

The standard for joining two-by lumber in wall framing is a 16d nail, which is three and a half inches long. For sheathing, subfloor, and lighter framing, an 8d nail at two and a half inches is common. A good rule is that the nail should penetrate the base material by about two-thirds of its length, so the thicker the assembly, the longer the nail.

What is the difference between a finish nail and a brad?

Both have small heads meant to hide, but a finish nail is thicker, usually 15 or 16 gauge, and holds heavier trim and casing. A brad is much thinner, typically 18 to 23 gauge, so it splits delicate molding far less but holds less weight. Use finish nails for baseboard and door casing, and brads for thin trim, panel edges, and craft work.

Should I use nails or screws for a deck?

Most modern decks use screws for the boards because screws resist pull-out and stop the squeaks and popped fasteners that nails develop over time. Nails are still fine for framing the structure, where their ability to flex under load is an advantage. Whichever you choose, the fasteners must be hot-dipped galvanized or stainless steel and rated for treated lumber.
